Top paying Engineering Branches
The most important factors for the success in a career are: Students own potential & hard work and the reputation of the institution, which students go for. Your future depends on the branch you choose since various branches have varied scope. While some are very popular, others are still gaining attention. The pay scale is completely dependent on your stream of engineering.
Computer Science Engineering:
Be it banking, airlines, insurance, railways, hospitals, hospitality or IT field; every where there is a requirement of software solution. The billions of devices produced in every sector from automobile to aerospace need microprocessor control, which are software driven. It is not only development or coding of these services and devices but also testing and life-time support, which needs CSE engineers. Service sector is the strongest as per job opportunities and commercial gains. This demand is not going to go away ever. The major chunk of jobs offered in India, every year, are for Computer Science engineers.

India always had robust heavy-manufacturing industries like steel, metal, forging, automobile and mining. All these industries require steady inflow of fresh engineering graduates. With the advent of automation, more & more engineers are required to monitor, supervise and fault-diagnose these systems. Mechanical engineers are also required in IT sector to design & develop ERP solutions as they are supposed to have better understanding of manufacturing and production processes. Sectors like Railways, heavy-engineering, ship yards, ports, mining, defence forces, National highways, metro rail corporation etc are the top employers for the mechanical engineers.
In the early 20th century, civil engineers were the best recognized engineers in India through their contributions in building huge dams, bridges, ports, airports and railways. During the decades of 70s to 90s, due to non-availability of many infrastructure related developments, the popularity and demand of this branch decreased and except government colleges, majority of private engineering colleges did not offer this branch. This created vacuum when infrastructure development boomed in the country during late nineties and early 2000. All construction projects required site engineers, supervisors and architects; fuelling the demand for civil engineers. All of sudden, there was rush among the private engineering colleges to open civil engineering branch. It is also simpler to study civil compared to other branches as it has minimal mathematics and no software learning except in the first year.

Electronics & Communication Engineering:
The top wireless service providers like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, Aircell etc do not hire many engineers as they have ready-made installation manuals & fault location systems which can be operated by technicians. Secondly, mostly they do hire through campus placements. The absence of electronics industry in India is another big reason that EC engineers do not have takers in industry. All TVs, mobile, computers, instruments, PDAs are only assembled in India, not manufactured.
This is the oldest and core branch of engineering which always had steady demand in terms of employability. All electricity boards, power sector organizations like NTPC, PSUs, railways, defense forces, manufacturing sector etc require electrical, electrical & electronic and electrical & instrumentation engineers. They are also hired by IT sector for ERP solutions and for even software development.
This branch is a combination of engineering & management. It involves operations, manufacturing/production & management. Curriculum includes process & system engineering & financing & engineering management. The degree makes you eligible for techno-managerial positions. The scope of placement is good if degree is pursued by a good college.
It teaches you the combination of mechanical, electrical & electronics skills but more or less it can be treated as subset of mechanical branch with emphasis on auto line. In recent days auto sector is booming in india with all international car manufacturers setting up their business & the growth rate is around 25%.
It involves process of conversion of raw materials to finished clothes. The textile engineer has to manage various processes from ginning to spinning to finish. Since course is available at few selected colleges, the competition is less & placement opportunities & salaries are fine.
It is all about application of science & technology to agricultural production & processing. It is really vast field combining various sciences & engineering fields & deals in production & processing agriculture commodities. Since India is moving to the next era in agriculture field, the scope for production, processing & management is great but at the same time as it is a specialized sector stream so one needs to check his priorities.
It deals with material science consisting metallic elements, mixtures & compounds. Although the branch of study is available in most of the top colleges, this is commonly not preferred by students. However this is a highly valued branch abroad & there are great career opportunities
The popularity and ranking of engineering branches have been driven by demand-supply situation However; each engineering aspirant has to have a long term vision.

Although it is setting foot in India but abroad this branch is the highest paid amongst all. The median starting salary for petroleum engineers is $74,240 , with the mid-career salary of $132,320, and with experienced petroleum engineers making around the $186,520 mark. Industry groups anticipate many employees will retire in the next decade, just as the global demand for energy is increasing. The demand for petroleum engineers is expected to exceed the number of individuals trained to fill available positions increasing demand.
Internationally and domestically this demand will advance the careers and the salaries of petroleum engineers.
