Verb Definition
Words that denote any work or action are called verbs.
They are also called ‘Action words’.
जिस शब्द से किसी कार्य का होना या करना समझा जाए, उसे क्रिया कहते हैं।
This article includes definition, transitive and intransitive verbs with examples, usage of verbs in sentences. All this is simultaneously explained in Hindi and English for better understanding.
The lesson is followed by examples and exercises based on verbs.

Types of verbs
Verbs are of 2 types
- Transitive verb
- Intransitive verb

सकर्मक क्रिया
अकर्मक क्रिया
Transitive Verbs
Transitive verbs are those verbs which take an object along with them.
For example – Ram eats food.
(verb ‘eat’ carries object food with it).
सकर्मक क्रिया
जो क्रिया कर्म के साथ आती है, उसे सकर्मक क्रिया कहते हैं .
उदाहरण – राम रोटी खाता है।
(क्रिया ‘खाना’ के साथ कर्म रोटी है)
Let us see another example sentence-
राज क्रिकेट खेल रहा है।
Raj is playing cricket.
Here, the verb ‘playing’ is a transitive verb because it is accompanied by an object i.e. cricket.

Intransitive Verbs
Those verbs which do not need an object to accompany them are Intransitive verbs.
For example- The dog barks.
अकर्मक क्रिया के साथ कर्म नहीं होता तथा उसका फल कर्ता पर पड़ता है।
उदाहरण – राम गाता है।
(कर्म का अभाव है तथा गाता है क्रिया का फल राम पर पड़ता है)
Let us see another example sentence-
राज खेल रहा है।
Raj is playing.
Here, the verb ‘playing’ is an intransitive verb because there is no object along with it and the result of the action ‘playing’ goes to the doer or the subject i.e. Raj.

Verbs Examples-Sentences
Let us see a few sentences to learn the proper usage of verbs-
1. उसने दरवाज़ा बंद कर दिया है।
He has closed the door.
2. हम आ गए है।
We have come.
3. क्या तुम खाओगे?
Will you eat?
4. क्या तुम खाना खाओगे?
Will you eat food?
5. हम पढ़ रहे हैं।
We are studying.
6. विद्यार्थी चिड़ियाघर गए थे।
The students went to the zoo.
7. क्या तुम यहाँ रहते हो?
Do you live here?
8. अध्यापिका आ गई है।
The teacher has come.
9. बाग़ में सुन्दर फूल खिले हैं।
Pretty flowers are blooming in the garden.
10. माँ तुम्हें बुला रही है।
Mother is calling you.

1. मैंने उनको क्रिकेट सिखाया।
2. उसे कार दुर्घटना में चोट लग गयी।
3. मैं खाना खा कर आऊँगा।
4. क्या तुमने मुझे बुलाया है ?
5. हवाईजहाज़ आसमान में उड़ रहा है।
Answers
मैंने उनको क्रिकेट सिखाया। |
I taught them cricket. |
उसे कार दुर्घटना में चोट लग गयी। |
He got hurt in the car accident. |
मैं खाना खा कर आऊँगा। |
I will come after I finish eating food. |
क्या तुमने मुझे बुलाया है ? |
Have you called me? |
हवाईजहाज़ आसमान में उड़ रहा है। |
The aeroplane is flying in the air. |
