The topic of determiners is in the syllabus of class 8 English grammar and students must have in-depth knowledge in order to score full marks in grammar questions. Here, we will discuss determiners for class 8 and provide some practice questions wherein the students can test their knowledge of determiners.

First of all, we must know What are Determiners?

Determiners are one of the nine parts of speech. ‘Determiner’ is a word used before a noun to indicate which things or people we are talking about.

The determiners a/an and the are called “articles”. They are the most common of all determiners. They come at the very beginning of a noun phrase. We divide them into “indefinite” and “definite” as shown below:

We use indefinite articles to mean non-specific persons or objects. Indefinite is general. We use definite article to mean specific person or thing. Definite is particular. When we are talking about something in general, we use a or an. ‘A’ is used before a noun that starts with a consonant sound (e.g., “p,” “b,” “m”).‘An’ is used before a noun that starts with a vowel sound (e.g., “a,” “e,” “i”). When we are talking about something in particular, we use the.

Think of the sky at night. In the sky we see so many stars and only one moon. So normally we would say:

  • I saw a star last night.
  • I saw the moon last night.

 

Article Rules for the definite article ‘The’
Rule 1 –
The very basic rule of the article says that the article ‘the’ is used before a singular or plural noun, which is specific. It indicates a particular thing/s or person/s in case of a common noun.
Example: The stranger she spoke to at the metro station was very rude.

Rule 2 –
Article ‘The’ is used when the listener knows what the speaker is talking about.
Example: The mangoes you kept in the refrigerator last night do not taste good.

Rule 3 –
‘The’ is used to generalize the whole class or group.
Example: The poor are marginalised.

Rule 4 –
‘The’ is used for geographical points on the globe.
Example: The equator and the Tropic of Cancer can never meet.

Rule 5 –
‘The’ is used for the nouns that cannot be counted.
Example: Two robbers stole all the diamonds from the bank.

Rule 6 –
‘The’ is used with geographical nouns, depending on the size and plurality of the noun. ‘The’ must precede the names of oceans, rivers, group of islands, lakes, mountains, countries with united states or islands, etc.
Example: The Nile is the longest river.
However, ‘the’ must not precede the following– Names of continents, like Asia, South America, etc Names of countries, states or streets like Alaska, Bolivia, New town street, etc. Names of Single lakes, mountains, islands or bays, like Chilika Lake, Hudson Bay, etc. Names of languages like Spanish, French, etc. Names of Sports such as basketball, cricket, football, etc. Names of subjects like Economics, Mathematics, History, etc.

Rule 7 –
‘The’ is mandatorily used for things that are only one of a kind in the universe.
Example: The Sun is a ball of fire.

Rule 8 –
‘The’ does not mean all.
Example: The books are my favourite (not all the books, just the books talked about)

Article Rule for Indefinite Article ‘A’ and ‘An’
Rule 1 –
The article ‘a’ is used before a consonant word or any vowel with a consonant sound.
Example: She is an intelligent girl.

Rule 2 –
A singular common noun always requires an article ‘a’ or ‘an’, but a plural common noun does not require any article or can have ‘the’ to particularize that noun.
Example: I saw an elephant. (Refers to a random elephant)

Rule 3 –
A/An is used to make a Proper noun a common noun. Proper nouns do not take articles but to make them common nouns, a/an is used.
Example: She is an American. (America is a proper noun but ‘American’ is a common noun)

Rule 4 –
Indefinite articles ‘a’ or ‘an’ are used to refer to numbers sometimes.
Examples: The toddler is playing with a toy (one toy).

Rule 5 –
The indefinite article (a/an) precedes the descriptive adjective.
Examples: She is an amazing singer.

Rule 6 –
The indefinite article is used with the determiners (few, lot, most).
Examples: There are a few birds in the sky.
