In The Price of Bananas, the businessman’s character is one of arrogance, rude and selfish. He is rich and self-absorbed, and he displays no sympathy or care for those around him. When a monkey steals a banana from a fruit vendor’s cart beside the temple, the businessman doesn’t accept responsibility for it, and does not pay for the banana. He insults the fruit seller and states that he has no accountability for an animal’s actions. The man’s pride prevents him from having any empathy or fairness. The story achieves its objectives by drawing attention to social injustice and financial depravity amongst the rich, and it demonstrates how money often leads people to be indifferent and disrespectful.

Character Sketch of the Fruit Vendor
In this story, the fruit vendor is portrayed as a poor, humble, and hard-working man. He makes his living by selling bananas at a street corner near the temple, and his daily sales account for his entire livelihood. When the monkey grabs a banana from his stall and he begs the businessman to pay, he does so because losing a banana is a loss he can’t afford. The businessman verbally abuses the vendor, treating him in humiliating ways, yet the vendor humbly complies without making a dramatic scene. Despite the way he was treated, he showed dignity. His honesty and sincerity managed to gain the sympathy of the narrator, who decided to pay for the banana anyway. The vendor is honest, poor, dignified in poverty, and simply an example of quiet resilience in the face of injustice.
