Character Sketch of the Narrator
The narrator of the story is a timid, socially awkward and self-conscious man who becomes increasingly anxious as he finds himself in formal or professional roles. His fear of banks is irrational and hyperbolic, contributing to the humorous tone of the story. Even though he has a simple task to complete – deposit money – he thinks he is the subject of scrutiny and ends up confusing himself and the bank officers, too. His nervousness and awkwardness are a repetition of his lack of confidence in Ben’s efforts to be more self-assured. The narrator’s exaggerated anxiety about a place as benign as a bank helps us understand him as a quirky, humorous character who shows how something small can blow up into a major obstacle for certain people.

Character Sketch of the Bank Manager
The bank manager is polite, professional, and slightly bemused at the narrator’s odd behaviour. He treats the narrator with respect and attempts to help him, but the narrator’s odd responses and discomfort cause him confusion. The manager is steady, calm, and in control, juxtaposed against the narrator’s tremulous feeling state, which he can only describe as “doing jumping jacks”. While the manager knows that he is supposed to be patient and calm, he is also bemused by the funny, parochialness of the narrator’s behaviour., again a reflection of some of Ben’s conflicted beliefs and feelings about both the narrator’s absurd behaviours and responses and to some extent his view of Banks! His indifferent heart (and mind) showcases his conflicting shape understanding of the uncomfortable nature of the narrator’s ridiculous fear!
