Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur announces Admission to PhD, MTech and MS Research Program  2019

IIT Kanpur PhD, MTech and MS Research Admission 2020 – Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has invited applications from Indian as well as foreign nationals for admission to PhD, MTech and MS (By Research) Programmes commencing from 02nd January 2020 (2019-20-II Semester).

Candidates who are in the final year of qualifying degree and are likely to graduate may also apply. Such candidates may be considered for admission to 2019-20-II academic session starting in January 2020

Eligibility Criteria for  IIT Kanpur PhD, MTech and MS Research Admission 2020

  • The eligibility conditions given below are the absolute minimum. Departments may stipulate other requirements over and above these.
  • The specified minimum marks/CPI (Cumulative Performance Index), referred to in subsequent sections, implies a minimum of 55 percent marks /5.5 (on a 10 point scale) as long as it is not less than the minimum pass marks/CPI; otherwise, the specified minimum marks/CPI implies the minimum pass marks/CPI.
  • Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes who have passed the basic qualifying degree are eligible to apply irrespective of marks/CPI and will be considered for admission.

PhD in Engineering

  • Applicants must have a master’s degree in Engineering with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum or a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or science (4 year program) with a minimum of 75 percent marks/7.5CPI or a master’s degree in science or an allied area while satisfying each of the following three criteria:
  • A minimum of 65 percent marks/6.5 CPI in the master’s degree
  • First division in bachelor’s degree, and
  • JRF/95 percentile or higher in GATE score
  • For admission into PhD Program In Biological Sciences & Bioengineering, applicants having a master’s degree in pharmacy/medicine/veterinary science with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum, or bachelor’s degree in pharmacy/medicine/veterinary science with a minimum of 75 percent marks/7.5 CPI, may also be considered
  • For admission into PhD in Computer Science & Engineering, applicants with master in computer applications while satisfying each of the above criteria in (a),(b) and (c) may also be considered
  • A valid GATE score is required for candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Design/Architecture, except in the case of candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs)
  • Candidates with a master’s degree in science must either have a valid GATE score or must have qualified for/in JRF/NET

PhD in Sciences

  • Applicants must have a master’s degree in a relevant subject or a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Or science (4 year program) with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum. Candidate either must have a valid GATE score or must have qualified for JRF. The requirement of GATE/JRF is waived for candidates having a master’s degree in science from IITs with a minimum CPI of 8.0.

PhD in Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS)

  • Applicants must have a master’s degree in a relevant subject or a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or science (4 year programme) or a master’s degree in the sciences or in an allied field of HSS with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum
  • Candidate either must have a valid GATE score or must have qualified for/in JRF/NET. The requirement of GATE/JRF/NET is waived for candidates having a master’s degree in science/arts from IITs with a minimum CPI of 8.0.

PhD in Management

  • The applicant must have a master’s degree in Mgt. or relevant disciplines in Engineering/Technology with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum or a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or science (4 year program) with a minimum of 75% marks/7.5 CPI or a master’s degree in science/arts/commerce/chartered accountancy while satisfying each of the following three criteria:
  • A minimum of 65 percent marks/6.5 CPI in the master’s degree,
  • First division in bachelor’s degree, and
  • JRF/95 percentile or higher in GATE/CAT/GMAT/NET or any other national level exam
  • A valid GATE score is required for candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering, except in the case of candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs)
  • Candidates with a master’s degree in science/arts/commerce must either have a valid GATE/CAT/GMAT score or must have qualified for/in JRF/NET

M.Tech Program

  • The applicant must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering or science (4 year program) or a master’s degree in science with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum
  • A valid GATE score is required for admission to the M.Tech. programme in the case of regular (non-sponsored)candidates. The requirement of GATE score is waived off for the B.Tech/B.S (Four Year) graduates from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two years in B.Tech/ B.S (Four Year)

MS (By Research) 2 Years Program

  • For Aerospace Engineering: Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or science (4-year programme) or a Master’s degree in science with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum.
  • For Electrical Eng & Mechanical Eng.: Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or science (4-year programme) with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum (ii) A valid GATE (GATE/ CSIR/ JRF/ NET) score is required for admission to the MS (Research) programme in the case of regular candidates (non-sponsored/non-project candidates)

  • Reservation shall apply as per Govt. of India rules

Financial Aids

  • Financial support (in the form of Institute Assistantship) is available to the regular (non-sponsored) students of MTech/MS (By Research) and PhD Programmes.
  • The MTech/MS (By Research) students are currently entitled to a monthly stipend of Rs.12400/- for 8 hours of work per week
  • For PhD students the corresponding financial support amounts to Rs.31000/- for the first two years, and thereafter, it is raised to Rs.35000/- for another three years.
  • Students may also avail financial assistantship from external funding agencies (such as UGC/CSIR/NBHM/INSPIRE etc.)

IIT Kanpur PhD, MTech and MS Research Admission 2020 Application Process

  • Candidates can apply online only http://www.iitk.ac.in/doaa/pgadmission.htm
  • The online applications portal (for Indian Nationals only) will be available from 03/10/2019 (01:00 PM) up to 31/10/2019 (11:59 PM).
  • Indian Nationals can apply only through online mode of application. Foreign Nationals can apply only through offline mode. The last date for receiving applications in both offline and online modes is 31/10/2019.
  • Offline Application Form (for Foreign Nationals only) (common form for PhD , MTech and MS (By Research)) can be downloaded
  • PhD applicants must arrange for two letters of reference as well. For this purpose, the names of the referees along with their email addresses are to be provided by the candidate at the online applications portal. The referees will be contacted electronically through an auto generated mail with a request to submit their recommendations online.
  • The application fee is Rs.400 for General, EWS and OBC candidates and Rs.200 for SC/ST and all DAP candidates (including General, EWS and OBC). The application fee is waived for candidates in the ‘Foreign National’ category.
