Tom is a fun-loving, imaginative, and intelligent boy who often finds himself in hot water, but usually manages to talk his way out of it. In the selected chapter, Tom demonstrates his usual cleverness as he tries to escape school and the wrath of his Aunt Polly from a scolding by feigning illness. He is laying it on thick and attempting to convince Aunt Polly of his illness. He’s attempt to deceive his aunt is short-lived when Sid catches him, and Aunt Polly soon finds out the truth. What Tom does is a typical adventurous child’s behaviour: playful, dramatic, manipulative, and yet endearing.

Character Sketch of Sid
Sid is Tom’s younger half-brother and is very quiet, obedient, and a watcher. Sid’s personality is the opposite of Tom’s; even though Tom is normally able to avoid trouble, Sid is not known for breaking rules, and his character is normally treated as the “good” child. In this chapter, Sid acts as an unintentional placeholder for Tom’s mischief when he discovers Tom’s fake toothache, and then becomes aware of Tom’s falsehood. Sid is the opposite of Tom, disciplined, honest, and almost a tattle-tale figure who indirectly exposes Tom by quietly noticing and revealing how Tom bends the truth when caught up in his playful tricks.

Character Sketch of Aunt Polly
Aunt Polly is Tom’s guardian. She is a strict but caring woman. She truly cares for Tom, and wants to raise him properly, but she struggles with Tom’s trouble-making. She is fooled initially by his exaggerated illness and takes some time to get over his deception. While Aunt Polly certainly scolds Tom, there is always that real love that is evident in Aunt Polly’s character. Aunt Polly is disciplined, while at the same time caring, and she represents the proper balance of authority and affection in Tom’s life.
