Character Sketch of the Snail

The snail in the poem is a quiet, self-sufficient, and guarded creature that carries its home anywhere it goes. The snail is defensive and introverted, withdrawing into its shell at the first hint of danger or inconvenience; this shows concern for security and safety over socialising or risk-taking.

The snail is small and slow; however, it is strong in a unique way: it relies on itself for all its needs for shelter, comfort, and sustenance. His movement solely depends on himself, moving at his own pace, in full control of his planet. The snail’s character illustrates values of self-sufficiency, contentment, and tenacity. He embodies what we could call a prudential wisdom that can only be gained through a thoughtful existence that avoids harm and is otherwise safe within one’s limitations.
