Character sketch of Tegumai

Tegumai Bopsulai is described as a slow, easy-going and thoughtful Neolithic man. Described perfectly by his name, “Man-who-does-not-put-his-foot-forward-in-a-hurry.” The spear broke whilst he was fishing, and instead of fearing the worst, he waited patiently to fix the spear, rather than send the young Taffy out for another, on her own. He never questioned Taffy, as he was trusting of her and her actions. Tegumai Bopsulai epitomises a man merged with wisdom, restraint, and complete familial trust.

Character Sketch of Teshumai

Teshumai Tewindrow, Tegumai’s wife, is characterised by her emotionality and quick reaction times. Her name means “Lady-who-asks-a-very-many-questions.” Although she does not ask that many questions in the plot, she seems to be a lot in commentary and assertion. She comes in contact with Taffy’s pictorial message and misinterprets it. Events that transpire afterwards can be more physically comic than laugh-out-loud funny. Altogether, Teshumai embodies a maternal protectiveness, moving forward from her interpretation of events, but she also lets her instinct respond overtly and impulsively to situations.

Character Sketch of Taffy

Taffimai Metallumai (Taffy) is a clever, imaginative, and fearless girl. Her name has the same meaning as “Small-person-without-any-manners-who-ought-to-be-spanked,” and is appropriate, as Taffy can be as rude as she is full of spirit. Taffy’s creative idea for sending a pictorial message is the beginning of writing. Her conversation with the stranger can’t be trusted; her kidnapping of the stranger’s shark’s tooth necklace was as much a product of her boldness and creativity as it was bad manners. Taffy has an adventurous imagination, and her character is defined by curiosity, creativity and a bit of mischief.
