CAT Syllabus 2021 – CAT is a test with no predefined syllabus, however past trends suggest that CAT tests in general aptitude including Verbal Ability (English), Quant Ability (Mathematics), Logical Reasoning (LR) and Data Interpretation (DI) skills. Similar to CAT, there are other admission tests – MAT, XAT, CMAT and SNAP. There are some B-Schools (like IIFT and IRMA) which conduct their own exam. Common Admission Test popularly known as CAT is all-India national level computer- based test conducted by Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) for admission to management programmes in IIMs and other reputed institutes of the country. Based on CAT percentile, candidates are called for next stage of selection process which usually consists of Group Discussion, Essay and Personal Interview (GDPI). CAT is a multiple-choice question based exam with negative marking for wrong answers.

What is the Syllabus for CAT 2021?

CAT English/Verbal Ability:Reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, syllogisms, analogies, antonyms and synonyms, Jumbled Paragraph, fill in the blanks, sentence correction, idioms, etc.

CAT Maths/Quant Ability:Number systems, geometry, troigonometry, probability, permutation combination, algebra, mensuration, time and work, averages, percentages, profit and loss, quadratic and linear equations, etc.

CAT Data Interpretation:Interpretation and analysis of data based on text, tables, graphs (line, area), charts (column, bar, pie), venn diagram, etc.

CAT Logical Reasoning:Clocks, calendars, binary logic, seating arrangement, blood relations, logical sequence, assumption, premise, conclusion, linear and matrix arrangement, etc.

Examination Pattern for CAT 2021

  • CAT is a computer- based objective type test with a mix of multiple choice questions (MCQs) as well as some non-MCQs
  • The CAT 2021 will comprise of three sections, i.e. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning & Quantitative Ability
  • The exam duration will be 180 minutes (3 hours) – 60 minutes will be given for each section.
  • Total Number of Questions: 100
    • Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension: 34 questions
    • Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning: 32 questions
    • Quantitative Ability: 34 questions
  • Marking Scheme
    • +3 for right answer
    • -1 for wrong answer
    • No negative marking for non-MSQs

Test Centres

  • CAT will be conducted in centres spread across around 147 test cities. Test cities will be mentioned in CAT website and the name of the test centre will be indicated in the Admit Card.
  • IIMs reserve the right to change or cancel any test centre / city and / or change the test time and date at their own discretion
