How will CBSE calculate JEE Main 2016 Final Rankings and Class XII Board Exam Marks?
CBSE has announced the standardization/normalization procedure (page 5) for class 12 board exam marks in preparing all India JEE Main 2016 merit list. Here is what the CBSE Notice says
The JEE Interface Group (JIG) has decided that 50% of Boards marks be standardized by equating percentile amongst different boards/examining bodies and anchoring them to All India JEE-Main percentiles, and 50% be normalized by equating each Board’s/examining Body’s percentile with JEE(Main) percentile marks of respective Boards /examining bodies.
The detailed procedure for normalization of Board marks will be as follows:
Note down the aggregate marks (A0) obtained by each student in JEE- Main.
Compute the percentile (P) of each student on the basis of aggregate marks in his/her own board (B0) computed from the list of five subjects specified (each marked out of 100). The percentile is to be computed among all students of the board whose subject combinations meet the eligibility criteria of JEE-Main.
Determine the JEE- Main aggregate marks corresponding to percentile (P) at the All- India level. Regard this as B1.
Also, determine the JEE- Main aggregate marks corresponding to percentile (P) among the set of aggregate scores obtained in the JEE- Main by the students of that board. Regard this as B2.
The normalized board score of the candidate will be computed as:
B (final) = 0.5 * (B1 + B2)
For the purpose of admission to CFTIs where it has been decided to use the JEE Mains performance and the Normalized Board performance in the 60:40 ratio, the composite score for drawing the merit list will be computed as:
C = 0.6 * AO + 0.4 * B (final),
Five subjects to be used for normalization:
- Physics
- Mathematics
- Any one of the subjects Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology and Computer Science
- One language
- Any subject other than the above four subjects.
In respect of 3, 4 and 5, the best mark in a given category will be chosen.

From the Normalisation Procedure as understood by me, it seems that the students who score well in the JEE Main exam, while not scoring too well in the Boards, are being favoured.
Rather, it should be the other way round, as I had read earlier, from the conceptualisation stage of considering the Board marks.
I believe, the concept behind this was that the students need to focus on their boards also, insteading of neglecting the boards, & the school studies, and just devoting all their time and energy coachings and focussing only on the JEE.
When 60% weightage has already been given to the the aggregate marks (A0) obtained by the student in JEE- Main, why are we again considering the JEE- Main aggregate marks corresponding to percentile (P) at the All- India level (B1) and also, the JEE- Main aggregate marks corresponding to percentile (P) among the set of aggregate scores obtained in the JEE- Main by the students of that board (B2) ?
Does this not mean that we are giving all weightage to JEE- Main aggregate marks only ?
Please illustrate with example. Because this is very confusing and we see that only JEE Main aggregate mark is being considered for ranking purpose.
While earlier it looked as if 40% weightage was given to Board marks. But now the board mark percentile calculated on 2 different basis is again being applied on JEE Aggregate mark. Not sure why – Hence, kindly explain more with example showing detailed working.
This formula to normalise the score of 12th class is so confusing rather it is something like an over head transmission for most of the students and the parents. Every step should be explained in a simple way with an example. It is a total mess that has been created. The children have been overburdened. Why all such difficulty level for non-medical students? When no such criteria is there for med or any other stream.Who is going to listen to the parents/common people’s plea? In the middle of the year it was notified the examn would be conducted with different norms. Children have been harassed and have been taken under pressure more than they were previously bearing. Its the voice of every parent and the student.

IITians are brought to the level of university graduates….
By enhancing weight-age of ten plus two in JEE The so called cream(IITians) are brought to university level. Now you will not get the cream. Hitherto the strength of IITs is the cream who pass thru JEE but definitely not the facilities or infrastructure at IIT. Even some private engineering colleges have excellent infrastructure. When you bring JEE to the level of any common engineering test( by giving weight-age to ten plus two), you can no longer expect GEMS. Fortunately you need not bother about brain drain. One way you produce same level of graduates.
This patern is so confusing so pls..explain in simple language by using example or some numerical data..
