Aerospace engineering covers the study of aeronautic and spacecraft engineering. It is a specialised field that applies the knowledge which gained from study of aeronautics and astronautics. Aerospace engineers design, analyse and test aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, missiles, and rockets.

For examples:  golf balls, high-speed trains, hydrofoil ships or tall buildings in the wind. They are specialists in fields such as aerodynamics, propulsion, navigation, flight testing, and more.

Aerospace engineers develop new technologies for use in aviation, defence systems, and space exploration, often they are specialising in other areas such as structural design, guidance, navigation and control, instrumentation and communication, or production methods.

They often use computer-aided design (CAD) software, robotics, and lasers and advanced electronic optics. They also may specialise in a particular type of aerospace products such as commercial transports, military fighter jets, helicopters, spacecraft, or missiles and rockets. They may be experts in aerodynamics, thermodynamics, celestial mechanics, propulsion, acoustics, or guidance and control systems.

Aerospace engineers usually gain employment in the aerospace product and parts industry, though the skills of such engineers who are now being valued in different fields. An example of this is in the manufacture of motor vehicles.

They are also responsible for designing vehicles which have a low resistance to air and greater efficiency with regard to fuel consumption.

Other than IITs, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology offers courses such as B.Tech. Space Technology (Avionics), B.Tech. Space Technology (Aerospace Engineering).

Amrita University, Coimbatore, also offers B.Tech Aerospace Engineering.
