Basic Components of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan Essay
The basic action plan of this mission is to build a triple number of sanitation facilities in India by the year 2019. It is laid by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation. The motive is to make India Open Defecation Free (ODF).
By 2019, the growth percentage has been increased from 3% to 10%. The daily construction number of toilets has been increased from 14,000 to 48,000 daily. School kids are also being involved to support this mission for spreading awareness on Sanitisation, Hygiene, and Water.
Urban Mission
Under the Ministry of Urban Development, the mission is to build community toilets, household toilets, public toilets, Municipal Solid Waste Management, and Capacity Building. The Urban Clean India Mission seeks to convert insanitary toilets into working ones, eliminate open defecation, manual scavenging, and proper working of solid waste management. Under this mission, 1.04 crore household toilets, 2.5 lakhs community toilets, and 2.6 lakhs toilets seats are to be built.
Rural Mission
Swachh Bharat Gramin, also known as Rural Mission, aims to make villages Open Defecation Free (ODF) by October 2, 2019, by providing individual toilets in every household and building various community toilets under public-private partnership mode.
It also emphasizes on providing sanitation facilities to village schools. To support the Clean India Mission, it also aims to construct Anganwadi toilets and proper waste management systems for solid and liquid wastes.

- Indore has been named as India’s cleanest city, whereas, Gonda (Uttar Pradesh) has been named the filthiest.
- Under the action plan to launch the National level Media Campaign, mobile telephony, audio-visual, and various local programmes will help to communicate the awareness.
- The estimated cost for the first five years of this mission is Rs. 62,009 crore where Central Government’s share is Rs. 14,623 crores.
- Gujarat has a maximum number of clean cities topping with 12 numbers followed by Madhya Pradesh with 11 cities.
- Out of 500 cities, 118 have been declared as Open Defecation Free (ODF).
- 297 cities have a door to door garbage facility available in India.
- Under Phase 1 of this mission, Vaishno Devi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Taj Mahal, Golden Temple, Tirupati Temple, Manikarnika Ghat, Jagannath Puri, Meenakshi Temple, Ajmer Sharif Dargah, and Kamkhya Temple were selected first for a clean-up drive.
- To improve tourists’ and visitors’ experience, this mission aims to make 100 places Swachh Tourist Destinations.
- Uttar Pradesh has 5 dirtiest cities, followed by 2 cities from Bihar and Punjab.
