Draft Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate programs approved by the University Grants Commission

The University Grant Commission in its meeting on November 3 has approved the Draft Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate programs that provides flexibility for students to switch from one discipline to another with ease. . In addition to the existing two-year master programs, the Commission will also introduce one-year master’s programs. The commission will make the document public in a couple of days to seek feedback from the stakeholders.

As per the latest regulations, students who pass the entrance exams will have the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree in a discipline unconnected to their undergraduate specializations. Students who qualified their undergraduate degrees with a double major may choose to pursue master’s degrees in any one of their two major subjects. Additionally, students who pass the undergraduate degree with a major and minor are eligible to pursue the major or minor (s) in the master’s programme

On Thursday, UGC Chairman Prof. M Jagadesh Kumar while talking to media said, “The new framework allows the students to do their master’s in any stream they choose as a major or minor in their UG program. In addition, they can also pursue a master’s degree in a discipline that is unconnected with their UG specializations, provided the student demonstrates competence by qualifying in an entrance test like CUET-PG,”.

Additionally, the Commission made admissions to ME, M.Tech, and related fields possible for students who successfully finished four-year UG, three-year UG, two-year PG, or five-year integrated programs (UG PG) in STEM topics. There is an exit option provided to students enrolled in two-year postgraduate programs after the first year. Such students will be awarded a postgraduate diploma.
