Turn the idiot box off

The first and foremost rule about doing things to enhance your child’s attention is to draw some out of the television. Make sure that you follow the same rule that your child has to follow. It is early on in life to explain to them why you get to keep watching the television while they don’t.

Designate a time limit for the phone

You need to put a curfew on the limit to the family phone during study hours in the house. Make sure that everyone in the house understands the requirement on cutting down the time spent on the phone especially if it is in the hearing vicinity of the children’s study range. Keep a check over the time that everyone is allowed over the phone.

Appoint specific homework area

Make sure that your child knows where they are to sit when it’s study time. Designate a proper room or a table where the kids can sit and concentrate on their homework. Also make sure that this place is as far away from any kind of distraction as possible. Check the position of your child while studying from an early age. Make sure that there is sufficient lighting too.

Be regular

One of the key factors behind academic success is regularity. There is nothing quite as important as the need for your child to be regular with his/ her work. Make sure that your child realizes the importance of finishing their homework. Although playing outside and making time for other activities is just as important but there should be some kind of priority delegated to their homework.

Set some time

While the practice of finishing homework before they run away for games or other activities is important, know that it is your responsibility to be able to work out a balance in these. It is not possible for a child to sit and study for hours together. Make sure you put them into a practice of giving rewards on regular and quality work.

Organize stuff

The worst habit to inculcate in your child would be of finishing things at the last moment. Be organized and make sure that your child/ teen know the importance of the same. Make a calendar or a space where you know what project or test is due and when. Make sure that you sequentially complete things off the calendar. This calendar or space will not only be a visual reminder of what’s due but also build pressure of not forgetting to work and put things aside till the last moment.

Make your child confident for tests

One of the most traumatic experiences as a student is not being able to score well in the class. Make sure that your child is not scared of giving tests. It is not a healthy practice to burn the midnight oil a day before the examination. Your ward should be rather well versed than doing all the cramming a day before the paper.

Keep an eye for irritation

At the end of the day, remember, that your child is but a child. They are bound to get irritated because of small things which are out of their comfort zone or out of their understanding. Remember to make positive comments on your child’s work rather than always pointing out what’s wrong.  You would not want your child to start associating homework with nagging at home.

Small things like these will make it easy for your child and you to not only get along but also from the very beginning growing up with the notion of learning the importance of doing things on time and accurately. Remember over burdening your child is not the key to his/ her success but smart and regular work is. Children of younger ages are sponges who will absorb things off the environment. So it is up to you to make sure that that environment is exactly how you want it to be.
