Character Sketch of Jody

Jody is a very mature, kind and friendly boy who was strongly motivated to live and take responsibility. Thus, when his father was saved by killing the doe, Jody felt the responsibility towards the fawn which was left without the mother. The man could not abandon the helpless creature because he was so kind in the heart and wanted to take care of it. When Jody convinces his father to bring the fawn home, he acts and thinks responsibly, more so, given his age. Using his spirit in the event he encounters in the forest shows great courage and determination. His departure with the fawn shows that has pure love for animals. Jody is an admirable character and looking at his actions one sees that he is sensitive and of a nurturing character.

Penny is a very wise and fair man who displays appreciation and the right attitude towards people’s actions and inactions. After gaining freedom from a snake bite, and the dangerous experience of near death, he honours Jody’s request to spare the fawn, with patience and courtesy. The way Penny speaks shows his gratitude towards nature and his respect for its balance and fairness. He trusts his son and therefore, approves the idea of Jody’s caring attitude for the fawn. Penny’s reassuring presence even during the strain symbolizes his mentorship in the life of Jody. It is very powerful that Jody and the readers are impressed by his wisdom and his ‘kindness’.

Character Sketch of the Fawn

The fawn stands for untainted virginity and purity and is able to depict the vulnerability of life. It is a defenceless animal for which the loss of its mother doe means a real grief and, after experiencing such a demise, it slowly becomes attached to its saviour Jody. Initially, the fawn approaches Jody with hesitation until it grows comfortable and forms a deeper relationship. With its tender and wholly innocent manner, it adds light and happiness to the tale, and the importance of consideration of others. This makes the fawn transition from being fearful to having trust, a very wonderful and memorable part of the story of Jody’s life.

Overview

 

The doe died so that Jody’s father’s life could be saved. Wouldn’t you feel a bit responsible for the helpless fawn whom the doe left behind? That’s exactly how Jody feels. He can’t get the thought of the fawn out of his head and he feels a deep pain inside him that wants to look after it. Jody goes to the forest regardlessly to search for the orphaned fawn. And, finally, after a passionate examination he finds it-large and shrinking –yes, scared! Slowly and gradually, he gains its confidence and takes it home and starts nurturing it with affection. Again, the message of the story is not about boy and a fawn but a call to all and sundry to respect nature, the world and its creatures in particular, and be responsible for the future generations.
