The Shed poem Summary

The poet tells us about a shed in the garden of his house. There is a spider web on the door and the hinges of the door are rusty. The poet hears the door creak when it is moved by the wind, at night. He plans to visit the shed one day. On one side there is a window with broken glass panes. When the poet crosses the shed, he feels that someone is looking at him through that window. He plans to look inside the window one day. The poet’s brother has scared his that there is a ghost under the wooden floor of the shed. If the poet enters the shed, the ghost will attack him and cut his throat. The poet shows his wisdom when he says that he knows that his brother tells lies to scare the poet. The brother wants to keep the shed as his exclusive hiding place and so he scares the poet. One day the poet will visit the shed. His reluctance is visible when he ends by saying that that day was not the day for the visit.

Poem Stanza 1

There’s a shed at the bottom of our garden
With a spider’s web hanging across the door,
The hinges are rusty and creak in the wind.
When I’m in bed I lie and I listen,
I’ll open that door one day.

Word Meaning
Shed:
a simple roofed structure used for garden storage, to shelter animals, or as a workshop.
Web: a network of fine threads constructed by a spider
Hinges: a moveable joint between a door or window and the wall.
Rusty: corroded by the formation of rust

Explanation of the Poem  –  At the end of the garden in the poet’s house, there is a shed. At the door of the shed there is a spider’s web. The joints of the door are rusted and when the wind blows, they produce a creaking sound. At night, when the poet goes to sleep, the creaking sound is heard. The poet wants to open the door of the shed and look inside, one day.

There’s a dusty old window around at the side
With three cracked panes of glass,
I often think there’s someone staring at me
Each time that I pass,
I’ll peep through that window one day. 

Word Meaning
Cracked:
damaged and broken
staring : looking intently
Peep: look inside

Explanation of the Poem – At the side of the shed, there is a window. It is full of dust. The window panes are made of glass which has cracks. The poet feels that whenever he crosses the shed, someone is looking at him through those window panes. One day the poet will look inside the window to see what is there inside the shed.

My brother says there’s a ghost in the shed
Who hides under the rotten floorboards,
And if I ever dare to set foot inside
He’ll jump out and chop off my head,
But I’ll take a peek one day. 

Word Meaning
Rotten:
something that has decayed and got spoiled
Floorboards:  A Plank of wood that is a part of the wooden flooring of the building
Dare: have the courage to do something
Chop off: cut
Peek: peep, look inside

Explanation of the Poem – The poet’s brother says that the shed is haunted by a ghost and it remains hidden under the spoiled wooden flooring of the shed. He scares the poet by saying that if he gathers the courage to enter the shed, the ghost will jump out and cut his head. Despite this, the poet plans to peep inside the shed one day.

I know that there isn’t really a ghost,
My brother tells lies to keep the shed for his den;
There isn’t anyone staring or making strange noises
And the spider has been gone from his web
since I don’t know when,
I’ll go into that shed one day soon,
But not just yet…

Lies:
saying something that one knows is untrue
Den: hiding place

Explanation of the Poem –  The poet knows that there is no ghost in the shed. His brother tells lies so that the shed can be his own hiding place. There is no one in the shed who stares at the poet or makes strange noises. The poet says that the spider web is also very old and the spider left it and went away long back. He adds that he plans to visit the shed one day but not at that very moment.
