However, it turned out to be a failure because it made Oompa-Loompa, who was volunteering for the testing of the product, so young that his age went into minus, meaning that he had to wait to be reborn. Hence, it was concluded that the product was too strong. Willy Wonka had to invent something else. After racking his brain, he came up with a new invention.

The story begins with Mr. Wonka trying to explain to Charlie how he had invented Vita-Wonk. He told him that he had rolled up his sleeves and had set to work. He knew then that he had to create something new. He squeezed his brain so that he could think of a new recipe. He said that he wanted to make people Old, and very old by creating age. He was looking for something which could live the longest span. After coming to that point, he cried in happiness as ideas were beginning to flood his mind. That meant he had to search for something on this earth which was the oldest being alive. Then, he told Charlie that he had asked himself what was the oldest living thing in the world and what lived longer than anything else. Charlie answered that a tree was such a thing. After telling Charlie he was right, he began discussing the various kinds of trees. He told Charlie that neither a Douglas fir nor an oak one and nor a cedar tree was the correct kind of tree. The required kind was the Bristlecone Pine tree, that grew on the slopes of Wheeler Peak in Nevada, U.S.A. He said that one could find that these trees were over four thousand years old and that this was a fact. He added that the boy could even ask a dendrochronologist if he didn’t believe him. He then jumped into the Great Glass Elevator and started off on a journey to collect all the old items of the world. He collected sap from the pine tree that was 4000 years old, the toenail clippings from a 168-year-old Russian farmer, an egg laid by a 200 years old tortoise belonging to the king of Tonga, a tail of a 51 year old horse from Arabia, whiskers of 36 year old cat, an old flee that had lived for 36 years, tail of a 207 year old Rat, black teeth of 97 year old grimalikn, the knucklebones of a 700 year old cataloo from Peru.He told Charlie that he had taken a part of each old item like a hair or an eyebrow or sometimes it was no more than an ounce or two of the jam scraped from between its toes while it was sleeping. He began telling him how amazing and dangerous these things were.

But then he said that it wasn’t time to tell that. He said that after a lot of boiling and bubbling and mixing and testing in his Inventing Room, he was able to produce one tiny cupful of oily black liquid. Out of that, he gave four drops to a twenty-year-old Oompa Loompa. Charlie asked Mr. Wonka what had happened. Mr. Wonka said that the result was fantastic. The moment the Oompa Loompa swallowed it, he began wrinkling and shrivelling up all over and his hair started dropping off and his teeth started falling out. Soon, he had become an old Oompa Loompa of seventy five. This, Mr. Wonka concluded, was how the Vita-Wonk was invented.

Once again I squeezed my brain, searching for the new recipe… I had to create age… to make people old… old, older, oldest… ‘Ha-ha!’ I cried, for now the ideas were beginning to come. ‘What is the oldest living thing in the world? What lives longer than anything else?’ ”

Explanation of the Above Passage – Mr. Wonka starts his story by telling that he rolled up his sleeves and set to work. Once again, he squeezed his brain. He had tried his best to think of a brand-new recipe. He first thought of what he wanted to invent. He wanted to invent something which would create age. That meant he had to make people old. He cried out in joy as he had started getting ideas for the new recipe. He then thought of two questions whose answers would help him in his invention. The two questions were: what was the oldest living thing in the world and what lived longer than anything else

“Right you are, Charlie! But what kind of a tree? Not the Douglas fir. Not the oak. Not the cedar. No, no, my boy. It is a tree called the Bristlecone pine that grows upon the slopes of Wheeler Peak in Nevada, U.S.A. You can find Bristlecone Pines on Wheeler Peak today that are over 4000 years old! This is fact, Charlie. Ask any dendrochronologist you like (and look that word up in the dictionary when you get home, will you please?). So that started me off. I jumped into the Great Glass Elevator and rushed all over the world collecting special items from the oldest living things…

Passage – “All over the world, Charlie,” Mr Wonka went on “I tracked down very old and ancient animals and took an important little bit of something from each one of them — a hair or an eyebrow or sometimes it was no more than an ounce or two of the jam scraped from between its toes while it was sleeping. I tracked down THE WHISTLE-PIG, THE BOBOLINK, THE SKROCK, THE POLLYFROG, THE GIANT CURLICUE, THE STINGING SLUG AND THE VENOMOUS SQUERKLE who can spit poison right into your eye from fifty yards away. But there’s no time to tell you about them all now, Charlie. Let me just say quickly that in the end, after lots of boiling and bubbling and mixing and testing in my Inventing Room, I produced one tiny cupful of oily black liquid and gave four drops of it to a brave twenty-year-old Oompa-Loompa volunteer to see what happened.”

Explanation of the Above Passage – Mr Wonka continued his story. He told Charlie that he had tracked down very old and ancient living beings which were located in different parts of the world. He had taken a little bit of something from each of them which was important for the making of his new product. That ‘little bit of something’ was either a hair, or a part of an eyebrow, or even an ounce or two of the jam between the toes of the living being which was taken while it was sleeping. He had succeeded in getting the whistle-pig, the bobolink, the skrock, the pollyfrog, the giant curlicue, the stinging slug and the venomous squerkle. The venomous squerkle, Mr. Wonka added, could spit poison right into a person’s eye from fifty yards away. However, he said that he didn’t have time to tell him about this. He concluded, saying that after lots of boiling and bubbling and mixing and testing in his Inventing Room, he had been able to produce only one tiny cupful of Vita-Wonk, which was an oily black liquid. He gave only four drops of the liquid to twenty-year-old Oompa-Loompa volunteer, whom he considered to be very brave because anything could have happened to the Oompa-Loompa. The worst possibility was that he could die, but even then he volunteered which was a bold and brave move for him. Then, he waited to see the results.

“It was fantastic!” cried Mr Wonka. “The moment he swallowed it, he began wrinkling and shrivelling up all over and his hair started dropping off and his teeth started falling out and, before I knew it, he had suddenly become an old fellow of seventy-five!
