Character Sketch of the King
King Krishnadeva Raya’s reign was called the Golden era of the Vijayanagara empire. He patronised art, literature, and architecture. The king was a great warrior and an accomplished poet. His works – such as the epic Amuktamalyada and the Sanskrit drama Jambavati Parinayam, were popular. He loved the queen but once, his pride made him annoyed when the queen’s yawning made him think that she had disrespected him. However, the witty advisor Tenali helped remove the veil of self-love from the king’s eyes and the king repented for his mistake.

Queen Thirumalambal was a loyal wife. One late evening when the king sought her audience to his poem, she yawned a few times, being tired from the day’s work. Tenali Ramakrishna is one of the eight royal poets or Ashtadiggajas in the court of king Krishnadeva Raya. He is a gifted poet and is the royal advisor due to his wit and humour. He is famous for his ability to provide solutions to unsurmountable problems. When the royal couple is estranged due to a misunderstanding, Tenali comes to the rescue. He makes the king realize his blind self-love and thus, the palace beams with happiness once again.
