What a Bird Thought is a poem on growth and experience. The poem is told from the bird’s perspective. As it grows up, the bird learns that its perspective has changed with experience. Its perspective has changed about how the world is made, from eggs and nests to leaves, only to learn later that the world is too vast to be understood by small creatures like birds.

The bird has been inquisitive from birth, as she has told us about the world she has been living in from her perspective. The first home of hers that she describes is the egg as round, small, and pale blue. The second home she lived in was a nest, though small, she was happy to live there with her mother. The bird then flies to the tree branch from her nest, only to see leaves around. Then the bird learns that she had been wrong the whole time; the world wasn’t a small place. The bird was a good observer and curious to learn new things. Moreover, she accepts her mistakes and chooses to correct them. She chooses to broaden her learning by extending her exploration. The bird has grown up and flown away from the tree to fulfil her responsibilities; by this time, she learns that the world is too vast to be understood by a small creature like her. The bird has stated a universal truth in the end, that the world is too small to be understood by its inhabitants.
