Change of Heart Introduction

Change of Heart explores the theme of sportsmanship. It gives a profound message that you should enjoy the game over win. Through Prabhat, the story criticises the basic nature of humans looking for the outcome instead of living in the moment. In the quest of winning, we miss out on the enjoyment of the moment. In the fear of losing, we miss out on participating in the games or events. The story, through Prabhat, critiques the human obsession for the outcome.

In the story Change of Heart, Surya’s approach towards games has eventually changed Prabhat’s competitive attitude towards games. He learned from Surya that the source of happiness doesn’t come from winning but from enjoying the moments.

Change of Heart Summary

Everybody in the school knew that Prabhat loved to win and couldn’t accept defeat. He won’t play the game that he would lose. He doesn’t love the feeling of losing. According to him, the feeling of losing is terrible and it’s the worst thing to happen to anyone. He was good at badminton.

A new student, Surya, has joined Prabhat’s school. Surya, too, was good at badminton. Prabhat was eagerly waiting for the last Friday of the month, as the coach used to conduct a friendly match in the game period. The team was decided on Monday and a match was fixed between Surya and Prabhat.

Prabhat was given the responsibility of keeping the score of their match. Prabhat was serious about this match, while Surya was relaxed and cracking jokes before the match.

On the day of the match, Surya turned out to be phenomenal at the badminton court, while cracking jokes in the middle of the game. Surya was winning the match but Prabhat changed the scoreboard when his opponent wasn’t looking at him. Although Prabhat won the match through cheating, he wasn’t as happy as he used to be earlier. Before this, he never cheated to win. Moreover, he was bothered that Surya didn’t mind losing. On the other hand, Surya appreciated Prabhat’s game and wanted to play another match with him.

The next day after the match, he was surprised to see Surya playing basketball. Prabhat noticed that none of the balls went through the basket for ten minutes, but he still enjoyed the game. He observed that Surya enjoyed every moment of the game. It’s only after observing Surya, Prabhat realised that happiness doesn’t need a tally of scores. He learned that one needs to enjoy the moment, not think about the desired result.

Prabhat observed Surya daily after that day and soon realised the changes in himself. He had started to play hide-and-seek and would get sad when the game came to an end. His friends discussed the changes in him. They appreciated him by saying that it was good fun playing with Prabhat and he has a great sporting spirit. He even started to crack jokes during the badminton game. It’s only because of Surya that Prabhat has started to enjoy the game rather than thinking about winning the game.

Sportsman Spirit

Change of Heart explores the theme of sportsman spirit in the game. It shows how Surya appreciated Prabhat’s game and he wasn’t disappointed to lose it. Instead, he enjoyed it. When Prabhat observed Surya’s happiness, he realised that winning wasn’t as important as enjoying the game.

Source of Happiness

Unlike Prabhat, Surya’s source of happiness doesn’t come from winning. He was enjoying the game rather than thinking about the outcome. Although, Prabhat cheated and won the game. He was still not happy after winning. Only Surya changed Prabhat’s opinion about the game.

Human’s Obsession Towards Outcome

Through Prabhat, the story criticises the human’s obsession towards the outcome. In the quest of winning, we forget to live the moments. Furthermore, our thoughts for participation come from the outcome. Like Prabhat, in the quest for a desired result, we miss out on happiness and moments.
