IIT Bhubaneswar PhD Admission 2024 – Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar invites application for admission to PhD Program offered in various disciplines for the academic session 2024-25 (Autumn Semester). Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar was established by the Government of India in 2008 as one of the eight new IITs. It is an Institute of National Importance.The institute is ranked 47th in the Engineering category and 91st in the Overall category by NIRF 2023. Additionally, IIT Bhubaneswar is ranked by several international organisations. The institute offers UG, PG, and PhD courses through seven schools of study.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for Institute PhD Scholar

  • An interested candidate meeting the below listed category wise minimum eligibility criteria may apply for the PhD programme.
  • The minimum eligibility criteria do not guarantee either shortlisting or selection, for the admission.
  • Applications not meeting minimum eligibility criteria will be rejected without any intimation and the application fee will not be refunded.
  • The minimum eligibility criteria refer to the minimum academic qualification to be met by the applicant at the time of applying for the admission.
  • Relaxation up to 5% marks in all academic examinations is permitted only for SC/ST/PwD candidate categories, over General/OBC(NCL) categories, as per Govt. of India (GoI) guidelines. This is applicable to applicants under both Institute and Sponsored PhD Scholar categories.
  • Candidates possessing the minimum eligibility criteria are eligible to receive Institute Research Assistantship or UGC/CSIR-NET Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) or any other doctoral fellowship offered by Govt. of India (GoI), as applicable, on joining the PhD programme.

School of Basic Sciences

  • Minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (in a 10-point scale) in Master’s or equivalent degree in appropriate disciplines.
  • Minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (in a 10-point scale) required in all other examinations from Class 10 onwards. A single relaxation up to 5% marks in secondary/higher-secondary/bachelor’s degree/equivalent is permitted.
  • The candidate must be GATE or CSIR-UGC NET (LS) qualified in an appropriate discipline

All Engineering Schools 

  • M. Tech./ME or equivalent degree in appropriate disciplines, with minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (in a 10-point scale). The candidate must be GATE qualified in an appropriate discipline. OR
  • B Tech/BE or equivalent degree in appropriate disciplines with minimum 70% marks or 7.5 CGPA (in a 10-point scale). The candidate must be GATE qualified in an appropriate discipline.
  • Minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (in a 10-point scale) required in all other examinations from Class 10 onwards. A single relaxation up to 5% marks in secondary/higher secondary/equivalent is permitted.

School of Earth, Ocean and Climate Sciences

  • Minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (in a 10-point scale) in Master’s or equivalent degree in appropriate disciplines.
  • Minimum 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA (in a 10-point scale) required in all other examinations from Class 10 onwards. A single relaxation up to 5% marks in secondary/higher-secondary/bachelor’s degree/equivalent is permitted.
  • The candidate must be GATE or CSIR-UGC NET (LS) qualified in an appropriate discipline.

School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management 

  • Minimum of 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA (in a 10-point scale) in Master’s degree in appropriate Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines.
  • Minimum 55% marks or 6.0 CGPA (in a 10-point scale) required in all other examinations from Class 10 onwards. A single relaxation up to 5% marks in secondary/higher secondary/bachelor’s degree/equivalent is permitted.
  • The candidate must be GATE or CSIR-UGC NET (LS) qualified in an appropriate discipline.

GATE / NET for Institute PhD Scholar

  • Candidates required to have GATE / NET in related Disciplines for PhD admission into Institute PhD Scholar category who receive Institute Research Assistantship sanctioned by the Ministry of Education (MoE).
  • Subject Wise GATE / NET Disciplines valid for PhD admission is available on institute website.

Application Process

  • Eligible candidates can apply online through the official website https://webapps.iitbbs.ac.in/phd-application/
  • The candidates desirous to seek admission are required to apply online. Only those applicants, who apply online before the last date and satisfy the eligibility criteria, will be considered for admission.
  • Read all instructions regarding filling up online forms, and admission to the courses are detailed before filling up the application form available on the official website.

 

Application Fee

  • For General and OBC Candidates: Rs.500/- (Rupees Five Hundred Only)
  • For SC/ST/PwD Candidates: Rs.250/- (Rupees Two Hundred Fifty Only)
  • N.B.: Application Fee (Non- refundable)
  • USD 50 for all categories (Foreign Nationals).
  • Application fee once paid shall not be refunded under any circumstances.
  • Female candidates are exempted from payment of application fee.

 

Selection Procedure

  • All shortlisted candidates (except the candidates Sponsored by External Organization) will have to appear for both the written test and the interview.
  • The final selection will be based on combined performances in the written test, interview, and academic career.
  • The combined scores of candidates will be calculated by assigning 40% weightage to the performance in the written test, 60% weightage to the interview.
  • The schools can fix cut-offs for written test and/or interview based upon the requirements.
  • For the candidates Sponsored by External Organization, the committee shall conduct an interview for the final selection.
