University of Pune (UOP) to hold bioinformatics exam in Feb
Those without formal training in bioinformatics can appear for the test
Providing a unique opportunity to aspiring `bioinformaticians’, the University of Pune’s Bioinformatics Centre will conduct BioInformatics National Certification (BINC) examination in February 2007, which will help identify talented bioinformatics professionals, and aid potential employers in recruitment.
BINC is being conducted by the UoP on behalf of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, which has selected UoP as the nodal centre for the exam. Conducted for the first time in November 2005, BINC is open to graduates of all sciences, engineering, technology, as well as agriculture, veterinary, medicine or pharmacy, who have studied bioinformatics and wish to be certified by the DBT.
The exam will be conducted on February 24-25 nationwide at four centres other than the UoP, including the Jawaharlal Nehru University (Delhi), Anna University, (Chennai), West Bengal Technical University (Kolkata), and the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (Bangalore).
The syllabus, timetable and pattern of the examination have been approved by experts across the country, and will consist of four sections: biology, physical & chemical sciences, IT and bioinformatics. Paper I of the exam will be objective, Paper II will be of short answers and Paper III will be a computer practical.
The recent boom in the bioinformatics industry has led to an increasing demand for competent professionals in the field. This, in turn has led to mushrooming of universities and private institutes offering courses in bioinformatics.
“Many of these institutes charge high fees, but offer low quality training, with lack of qualified faculty, and even talented students,’’ said Ashok Kolaskar, founder-director of the Bioinformatics Centre, speaking at a press conference today. “BINC will also serve as an official certification that will be accepted in the industry. We want people to realise that this is a good opportunity for all students, even those who do not have a formal education or qualification in bioinformatics’’ Kolaskar added.
