Character Sketch of the Narrator
The narrator works in a space station. The role is not specified, however, he is told to check the stock of supplies at the space station. Their office is a small cubbyhole. The narrator is smart and good at problem-solving. This is because the narrator was able to correctly identify why Claribel kept fainting. The narrator has a good memory, as he can remember that canaries were used by miners to indicate the level of harmful gases in the deep mining areas.

Character Sketch of Sven Olsen
Sven Olsen works on the construction of a space station. He weighs less than 150 pounds, so he can easily work in the spacesuit without letting his weight force him to be influenced by the gravity shifts. Sven is one of the best construction men. He excells at the tricky and specialised work of collecting assorted girders. He does not care much for rules and regulations, because he smuggles in a canary without checking with his seniors. He is extremely caring for the canary. He names her Claribel, and becomes anxious when she faints and her heartbeat is not detected.

Character Sketch of Claribel
Claribel is a yellow canary bird that is smuggled inside the space station by Sven Olsen. She is not easily influenced by gravity because of her ability to fly and her small stature. She does not eat much, so she does not consume the rations of the space station. However, she gains weight because she only floats and moves without much effort. When she gets upset, she hides in the ventilating shafts and storage bulkheads and makes whistling sounds. Her heightened senses easily detect the harmful gases in the air.
