Character Sketch of Major Somnath Sharma
Major Somnath Sharma was a brave and selfless soldier who fought in various battles and the second World War. His legacy was made and established by his fearless leadership and noble sacrifice in the Indo-Pakistan 1947-48. He is the symbol of the highest standards that a soldier can achieve. He came from a family with a rich military legacy. His father was in the military and his grandfather told him stories of the Mahabharata and its battles, which invoked a sense of courage and patriotism in him from a very young age. He was always committed to his country. He trained hard at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was praised in the military reports due to his dutiful and heroic service in the 8th Battalion, 19th Hyderabad Regiment in 1942 and World War II in the Arakan Campaign in Burma. During the battle of Badgam, he remained with the D Company despite a plastered hand. He led the team till his last breath and made the supreme sacrifice in line of duty towards his nation.
