NLSIU Bengaluru Admission 2024 – National Law School of India University, (NLSIU) Bengaluru invites application for admission to 2-years Master’s Program in Public Policy, 3-years LLB (Hons) Program and Research Degree Programs (PhD) for the Academic session 2024-25.
About NLSIU Bengaluru
- NLSIU was the first National Law University established in India in 1986. The premier law school was set up with a mission to pioneer legal education reforms, and to anchor the transformation of the Indian legal system through research and policy interventions.
- The NLSIU was one of the first institutions in the country to introduce the five-year integrated law degree at the undergraduate level with the commencement of the first batch in 1988.

Eligibility Criteria
LLB (Hons) Program
- Any person holding a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized national or international University is eligible to apply to the programme. Applicants in the general category should have graduated with an aggregate of not less than 45% of total marks. Applicants in the SC/ST category should have graduated with an aggregate of not less than 40% of total marks.
- Students in the final year of their Bachelor’s degree are also eligible to apply.
- However, their final offer of admission will be contingent upon successful completion of their Bachelor’s degree with the minimum aggregate marks specified above.
Master of Public Policy
- Any person holding a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized national or international University is eligible to apply to the programme. Applicants in the general category should have graduated with an aggregate of not less than 45% of total marks.
- Applicants in the SC/ST category should have graduated with an aggregate of not less than 40% of total marks. Students in the final year of their Bachelor’s degree are also eligible to apply.
- However, their final offer of admission will be contingent upon successful completion of their Bachelor’s degree with the minimum aggregate marks specified above.

For PhD in Law
- Candidates having LL.M. Degree (regular mode) from a recognized University securing an aggregate of 55% marks or its equivalent grade (50% of marks or its equivalent grade in case of SC/ST/PWD)
For Ph.D (Interdisciplinary) Program
- A master’s degree in any discipline through regular mode with a minimum of 55% or equivalent grade (50% of marks or its equivalent grade in case of SC/ST/PWD), and a Bachelor’s in Law (LL.B.) degree from a recognized University through regular mode; or
- A candidate having passed the Company Secretaryship examination conducted by the ICS in India and having been awarded Associate Membership of the Institute (ACS), and a Bachelor’s in Law (LL.B.) degree from a recognized University through regular mode; or
- A candidate having passed the Chartered Accountants examination conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants and having been awarded Membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, and a Bachelor’s in Law (LL.B.) degree from a recognized University through regular mode.
Application Process
- Online application form for the programme will be available on NLSIU’s website https://www.nls.ac.in/ from 24th February 2024.
- Application fees shall be Rs.2500/- (Two thousand five hundred only)
- Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Economically Weaker Sections, and Persons with Disabilities shall be required to pay Rs.2000/- (two thousand five hundred only).
Admission Process
NLSAT
- The maximum intake for the 3-year LL.B (Hons.) programme in the Academic Year 2024-25 is 120 and ONLY students qualifying as per the criteria set out below will be admitted. Admission to the programme will be through an all-India written admissions test, the National Law School Admissions Test (NLSAT-LLB).
NLSAT – LLB
- All candidates seeking admission to the programme shall appear for the NLSAT-LLB. The NLSAT-LLB will have a single question paper comprising two parts — Parts A and B. All candidates shall be required to attempt both parts of the question paper. The examination shall be for a duration of 150 minutes.
Part A
- Part A of the NLSAT-LLB paper will consist of Multiple-Choice Questions, and shall be for a maximum of 75 marks. Each question will be of one mark. 0.25 marks shall be deducted for each wrong answer, and for each unanswered question.
- Part A will constitute the first stage of the admissions process. A rank list of candidates will be prepared based on their performance in Part A of the NLSAT-LLB. To be eligible for evaluation of Part B of the NLSAT-LLB paper, a candidate should have secured more than zero marks in Part A of the paper.
- From amongst these eligible candidates, Part B of the NLSAT-LLB answer scripts will be evaluated in a ratio of 1:5 based on performance in Part A. That is. five candidates per seat available will qualify for evaluation of Part B of the examination.
Part B
- Part B shall consist of subjective questions which shall be for a maximum of 75 marks. A fresh and final rank list shall be prepared based on the cumulative performance in Parts A and B of the NLSAT-LLB. Offers of admission shall be made according to this final rank list subject to the candidate satisfying the following conditions:
- (a) The candidate should have secured more than zero marks in both Parts A and B of the NLSAT-LLB.
- (b) The candidate’s cumulative score (sum of Part A and Part B) should be above the 75th percentile of the eligible candidates if they have applied under the General and EWS categories. Their score should be above the 40th percentile of the eligible candidates if they have applied under the SC/ST/OBC-NCL or PWD categories.
- Note: The applicable reservations policy shall be applied at each stage of the admissions process.
MPP Program
- The maximum intake is up to 120 students for the 2-year MPP programme in the Academic Year 2024-25 and ONLY students qualifying as per the criteria set out below will be admitted.
- Admission to the programme will be through an all-India written admission test, the NLSAT-MPP. NLSAT-MPP
- All candidates seeking admission to the programme shall appear for the National Law School Admission Test for Masters in Public Policy (NLSAT-MPP). The NLSAT-MPP will have a single question paper comprising two parts — Parts A and B. All candidates shall be required to attempt both parts of the question paper. The examination shall be for a duration of 150 minutes.
Part A
- Part A will consist of Multiple-Choice Questions and shall be for a maximum of 75 marks. Each question will be of one mark. 0.25 marks shall be deducted for each wrong answer, and for each unanswered question.

Part B
- Part B will consist of questions related to policy, and quantitative skills which shall be for a maximum of 75 marks. A fresh and final rank list shall be prepared based on the cumulative performance in Parts A and B of the NLSAT-MPP.
- Offers of admission shall be made according to this final rank list subject to the candidate satisfying the following conditions:
- (a) The candidate should have secured more than zero marks in both Parts A and B of the NLSAT-MPP.
- (b) A candidate seeking admission in the General Category or EWS categories must secure a score above the 75th percentile of the eligible candidates in the aggregate score of Parts A and B. A candidate seeking admission in the SC or ST or OBC-NCL or PWD category must secure a score above the 40th percentile of the eligible candidates of the aggregate score of Parts A and B.
- Note: The applicable reservations policy shall be applied at each stage of the admissions process.
PhD
- Candidates will be selected based on the marks obtained by the candidate in the NLSAT-PhD, the research proposal, and the oral presentation. The weightage of each score component shall be as follows:
- a) NLSAT-PhD: 50%
- b) Research Proposal: 35%
- c) Oral Presentation: 15%
- The dates for the oral presentation shall be announced after the completion of the NLSAT-PhD. They are likely to be held in April – May 2024. Classes for coursework component of the Ph.D. programme shall commence in the University in July 2024.
Syllabus
- The syllabus for the subjective test is as follows:
- Legal Aptitude/Reasoning (50 marks): Legal aptitude will consist of problem-based questions to which short answers will be sought. Prior knowledge of law is not expected. This section will have 10 questions of 5 marks each.
- Current Affairs (15 marks): Current affairs shall consist of one essay of no more than 500 words. Students shall be required to answer one of three options. Applicants will be tested on their knowledge of the issue, the ability to make cogent written arguments and write a well-structured essay. Knowledge of the law is not expected.
