Categories of PhD Program

Institute Research Scholars (Full Time)

  • Candidates under this category are entitled for fellowship from the Institute as per MHRD norms. The candidate must have qualified GATE.

 
Sponsored Research Scholars (Full Time)

  • Candidates under this category receive financial support from AICTE under QIP scheme or from Government Institutes/ organizations under study leave. Foreign students shall be sponsored by their Government or awarded scholarship by Govt. of India, ICCR or other such organizations/ agencies.

 
Self-Financed Research Scholars (Full Time)

  • Candidates under this category are those who support themselves or receive fellowship from other agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DST etc.

 
Self-Financed Research Scholars (Part Time)

  • Candidates under this category shall be persons employed in nearby (within 60 km radius from NIT Jamshedpur) Industries/Institutes/R&D organizations. They shall be required to furnish no objection certificate from the employer.
  • Candidates employed in Industries/Institutes/R&D organizations outside 60km radius shall be required to get leave from the employer to meet minimum residential requirement of one year to complete coursework. There should be adequate research facilities and a co-supervisor with PhD degree in the relevant area of research should be available at their workplace.

 
Faculty/Staff/Sponsored Project Fellow of NIT Jamshedpur (Part Time)

  • Regular faculty members, regular staff members and sponsored project fellows of N.I.T. Jamshedpur are eligible for admission to PhD program in concerned Departments

 

Eligibility Criteria for NIT Jamshedpur PhD Admission 2019

    • PhD in Engineering: Master Degree in relevant branch of Engineering/Technology with minimum 60% marks or equivalent CPI 6.5 or; Bachelor’s degree in relevant branch of Engineering/Technology with minimum 75% marks or equivalent CPI 8.0

 

PhD in Sciences, Computer Applications, Humanities, Social Sciences & Mgt.

 

  • Master’s Degree in the relevant subject with a minimum 60% marks or equivalent CPI 6.5 OR Bachelor’s degree in relevant branch of Engineering with minimum 75% marks or equivalent CPI 8.0

 
Selection Procedure

  • The selection procedure for admission to PhD Program is based on consistently good academic record throughout and test/interview performance

Reservation

  • Reservation for SC/ST/OBC is applicable as per Govt. of India rules

 
Institute Fellowship

  • The candidates selected for admission to Ph.D. Program as full-time research scholar is eligible to receive institute fellowship as follows. The tenure of a research fellowship is four years only but it is based on the performance of the research work and other assignments of the Department. The full-time research scholars have to assist in teaching and laboratory work assigned by the concerned Department
  • Candidates joining with Master’s Degree in Engineering / Technology or a degree recognized as equivalent thereto,
  • Rs.25000/- per month, for the first two years
  • Rs.28000/- per month, in the next two years
  • Candidates joining with a Master’s Degree in Sciences / Humanities / Social Sciences /MCA / MBA or a degree recognized as equivalent thereto,
  • Rs.25000/- per month, for the first two years
  • Rs.28000/- per month in the next two years
  • The above institute fellowships are subjected to change from time to time, under directions of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt of India

 
NIT Jamshedpur PhD Admission 2019 Application Process

  • The downloadable application form and the information brochure for admission to Ph.D. program are available on Institute website www.nitjsr.ac.in
  • The filled-in applications along with the necessary documents and a crossed Demand Draft for Rs.1000/- (Rs.500/- in the case of SC/ST candidates) towards Registration fee, drawn in favour of the Director, National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur, payable at SBI RIT Branch (Code 1882), NIT Jamshedpur and should reach to Associate Dean (Academic: PG & R), NIT Jamshedpur-831014, Jharkhand (State) on or before 28th December 2018
  • Superscribe on the envelope “Application for PhD Admission in the Dept. of _______” the candidate is required to write on the reverse side of the Demand Draft his/her name and the program to which the application is being submitted
  • It is advised to send the application form by Speed Post/Registered Post
  • The candidates who are employed and wish to do PhD under Part-time Research Scholar (PRS) category must submit Sponsorship/No objection certificate from the employer at the submission of application/time of admission, without which admission will not be possible
