About Indian Statistical Institute

Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a public university which is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the 1959 act of the Indian parliament.It grew out of the Statistical Laboratory set up by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in Presidency College, Kolkata. Established in 1931, this unique institution of India is one of the oldest institutions focused on statistics, and its early reputation led it to being adopted as a model for the first US institute of statistics set up at the Research Triangle, North Carolina by Gertrude Mary Cox.

Eligibility Criteria

 

Bachelor’s Degree Programs

  • Bachelor of Statistics (Honours) [B Stat (Hons)] /Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours) [B Math (Hons)] : In order to be eligible for admission to this programme, an applicant must have successfully completed 10+2 years of Higher Secondary Education (or its equivalent) with Mathematics and English as subjects.
  •  Bachelor of Statistical Data Science (Honours) [B SDS (Hons)] : In order to be eligible for admission, a student must have successfully completed 10+2 years of Higher Secondary Education (or its equivalent) with Mathematics and English as subjects of study.

 

Master’s Degree Programs

  • Master of Statistics [M Stat]/ Master of Mathematics [M Math] / Master of Science in Quantitative Economics [MS (QE)] / Master of Science in Quality Management Science [MS (QMS)] / Master of Science in Library and Information Science [MS (LIS)] /  : In order to be eligible for admission to this programme, an applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree of three or more years’ duration, in any discipline.
  • Master of Technology in Computer Science [M Tech (CS)] / Master of Technology in Cryptology and Security [M Tech (CrS)]  : In order to be eligible for admission to this programme, an applicant must have 
  • a four-year B E/ B Tech (or equivalent) degree in any stream or, 
  • a master’s degree in any subject and have passed Mathematics at the 10+2 level.
  • Master of Technology in Quality, Reliability & Operations Research [M Tech (QROR)] : In order to be eligible for admission to this programme, an applicant must have
  • (i) a Master’s Degree in Statistics with Physics and Chemistry at the (10+2) level; or
  • (ii) a Master’s Degree in Mathematics with Statistics as a subject at undergraduate or post-graduate level, and Physics and Chemistry at the (10+2) level; or
  • (iii) a BE/B Tech degree or any other qualification considered equivalent (such as AMIE).

 

Diploma Programs

    • Postgraduate Diploma in Statistical Methods and Analytics [PGDSMA] : In order to be eligible for this programme one must have one of the following:
    • a three-year Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with Mathematics as a subject;
    • a BE/B Tech degree or any other qualification considered equivalent (such as AMIE).
    • Postgraduate Diploma in Agricultural and Rural Management with Statistical Methods and Analytics [PGDARSMA] : In order to be eligible for admission to this programme, an applicant must have a three/four-year Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with Mathematics/Statistics as a subject studied at least at the (10+2) level.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Statistics [PGDAS] (provided online
  • through Coursera) : In order to be eligible for this programme one must have a graduate degree in any subject and mathematics at the (10+2 or equivalent) level.

 

Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) : 

  • Mathematics – In order to be eligible for admission to this programme, an applicant must have
    • an M Math/ M Stat degree from ISI, or
    • an MA/ M Sc or equivalent degree in Mathematics, or
    • an ME/ M Tech degree or equivalent with Mathematics as a subject.
  • Statistics –  In order to be eligible for admission to this programme, an applicant must have
    • an M Stat/ M Math degree from ISI, or
    • an MA/M Sc or equivalent degree in Statistics.
    • Quantitative Economics In order to be eligible for admission to this programme, an applicant must have
    • a Master’s degree in any discipline with Economics/ Mathematics/ Statistics as a subject at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.
  • Computer Science – In order to be eligible for admission to this programme, an applicant must have
    • an ME/ M Tech or equivalent Master’s degree in Electronics/ Telecommunication/ Radio Physics/ Computer Science/ Electrical Engineering/ Microwave Communications/ Information Technology/ Bioinformatics/ Biotechnology with Mathematics as a subject at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, or
    • an M Stat/ M Sc/ MCA/ MA or equivalent Master’s degree in Physics/ Mathematics/ Applied Mathematics/ Statistics/ Electronic Sciences/ Computer Science/ Atmospheric Science/ Information Technology/ Bioinformatics/ Biotechnology with Mathematics as a subject at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.
  • Quality, Reliability & Operations Research (QROR) – In order to be eligible for admission to this programme, an applicant must have
  • an M Tech/ ME/ MS/ M Phil or equivalent degree in Quality/ Reliability/ Operations Research, or
  • an M Stat/ M Sc/ MA or equivalent degree in Mathematics/ Statistics/Physics with Mathematics as a subject at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.

 

Research Fellowships (JRF) in Other Subjects

  • Physics and Applied Mathematics – 
      • A Master’s or equivalent degree in Physics/ Mathematics/ Applied mathematics/ Statistics
      • or an M.E./ M. Tech or equivalent degree with Mathematics and Physics as subjects.
      • Geology –  An M.Sc. degree in Geology or in an equivalent subject with minimum 55% marks in aggregate.
  • Biological Science – 1 Areas: Agricultural and Ecological Research, Environment Science : 
      • an M.Sc. in Agricultural Entomology/ Plant Pathology/ Agriculture Biotechnology/ Biotechnology/ Botany/ Biochemistry/ Microbiology/ Environmental Sciences/ Life Sciences/ Zoology from a recognized University with good academic record
  • 2. Area: Human Genetics
      • an M Sc or equivalent degree in Biochemistry / Biotechnology / Genetics / Molecular Biology / Life Sciences / Zoology
  • Linguistics – Area: Corpus Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Language Documentation and Digitization
    • BA (Honours) in Linguistics/English and MA (First Class) in Linguistics with specialization
    • in Morphology/ Semantics/Corpus Linguistics/Natural Language Processing/Computational Linguistics/ Applied Linguistics/Lexicography/Language Digitization/Machine Translation.

Doctor of Science [D Sc]

  • The D Sc degree is awarded only in exceptional cases on the basis of outstanding published work. Only those who satisfy one of the following requirements are considered for the award.
  • (i) B Stat (Hons)/B Math (Hons) degree or the Statistician’s diploma of the Indian Statistical Institute and at least eight years of independent research work in Statistics.
  • (ii) M Stat degree or Certificate of successful completion of the Two/Three year Advanced Statistician’s Course of the Indian Statistical Institute and at least four years of independent research.
  • (iii) Ph D degree of the Indian Statistical Institute and at least two years of subsequent research.
  • (iv) At least eight years of research work in the field of Statistics after the Bachelor’s degree of a recognized university or institute of which at least one year of work must be at the Indian Statistical Institute.

 

Application Process

  • Applicants must also apply online (https://www.isical.ac.in/~admission/). However, they must take the Admission Test at one of the Test centres located in India (see Prospectus).
  • Applicants should read carefully the Prospectus and the instructions given in the website before filling in the application form. 
  • All Indian Citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), who obtained their OCI card on or before 26th March 2024, are eligible to apply.

 

Application Fee

  • Rs 1500.00 for all male applicants, who are Indian citizens, in the general category,
  • Rs 1000.00 for all female candidates, who are Indian citizens, in the general category
  • Rs 750.00 for applicants, who are Indian citizens, belonging to SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/
  • Persons with Disabilities (PwD) categories,
  • Rs 1500.00 for all Overseas Citizens of India.
  • Applicants may have to pay an additional amount towards bank charges.

 

Selection Procedure

  • Selection of candidates will be based on their performance in written test(s) and interviews conducted by the Institute subject to satisfying the minimum academic qualification.
  • Note: ISI offers PhD degrees only in the areas mentioned in 14 (a)-(e). Candidates who have been awarded a Junior Research Fellowship in the five aforementioned areas by NBHM/ CSIR/ UGC/ ICMR/ DST/ DBT based on a nationally conducted written Admission Test are also required to clear the ISI Admission Test or an equivalent test conducted by the institute if they wish to obtain a PhD degree from ISI.
  • An equivalent admission test for applicants to JRF in Computer Science, who are awardees of CSIR/ UGC NET Junior Research Fellowships, will be held on 6 June, 2024.
