Eligibility Criteria

For Integrated PhD

  • Students with a B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech./M.B.B.S. or an equivalent degree from any recognized University/Institute/College can apply for the Integrated PhD Programme in Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Earth Sciences and Physical Sciences.
  • Candidates whose final B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech./MBBS exam remained incomplete due to the pandemic, may also apply. Admission, however, will be subject to completion of all formalities as described in ‘Selection procedure’.
  • Minimum Qualifying marks : Candidates need to secure a minimum of 60% marks/equivalent grades in Honours/Major (if applicable), or 60% marks/equivalent grades in Aggregate (if Honours/Major is not applicable).
  • Those who are appearing in the final examination of their degree course can also apply; for them, the eligibility marks are 60% based on the marks obtained in the undergraduate examinations held till the date of submission of the application form.

Who can apply

  • Please note that applicants who have qualified in the following nationwide aptitude tests in the year 2024 only can apply for the programme :
  • For Biological Sciences: JAM (Biotechnology) / JGEEBILS
  • For Earth Sciences: (a) JAM (Geology) OR (b) JAM Chemistry for research in Environmental Science OR (c) JAM Physics for research in Computational Mineralogy
  • For Physical Sciences: JAM (Physics)/JEST (Physics)

 

For MSc. Program in Chemistry

  • Students with a Bachelor’s degree with Chemistry as a subject for three years, or an equivalent degree from any recognized university/institute/college can apply for the Two-Year M.Sc. programme in the Department of Chemical Sciences.
  • *Candidates who are in the final year of B.Sc. may also apply. Admission, however, will be subject to completion of all formalities, as described below, in ‘Selection Procedure’.
  • Minimum Qualifying Marks:* Candidates need to secure a minimum of 60% marks/equivalent grades in Honors/Major (if applicable), or 60% marks/equivalent grades in aggregate (if Honors/Major is not applicable). Those who are appearing in the final examination of their degree course can also apply; for them, the eligibility marks are 60% marks/equivalent based on the marks obtained in the undergraduate examinations held till the date of submission of the application form.

Who Can Apply:

  • Please note that applicants who have qualified in the following nation-wide aptitude tests in the year 2023 or 2024 only can apply for the programme: JAM (Chemistry).

 

For MSc. Program in Mathematics

  • Students with a B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech. or an equivalent degree from any recognized University/Institute/College with Mathematics as one of the subjects can apply. Admission, however, will be subject to completion of all formalities, as described below, in ‘Selection Process’.
  • Minimum Qualifying marks: Candidates need to secure a minimum of 55% marks/equivalent grades in aggregate. Those who are appearing in the final examination of their degree course can also apply; for them, the eligibility marks are 55% based on the marks obtained in the undergraduate examinations held till the date of submission of the application form.
  • JAM-Mathematics is not essential for applying for an MSc in Mathematics.

  • Applicants should save the properly filled application form and take a print as the hard copy of the application. In case a candidate is applying to multiple departments, separate applications need to be filled for each department.

Selection procedure

Int. PhD

  • Institute-level committee(s) will scrutinize all the applications, and prepare a shortlist of candidates, who will be called for an interview. 

 

MSc in Chemistry

  • Based on the JAM (Chemistry) rank applications will be shortlisted and called for interview. Candidates will be selected on the basis of the interview performance.
  • *The candidates whose final results are awaited will be admitted provisionally. Such candidates need to fulfill all the criteria within 60 days of their admission.

 

MSc in Mathematics

  • MSc-Mathematics Entrance Test (subjective-3 hours) will be held at IISER Kolkata (Refer to Syllabus). The Institute will declare the list of selected candidates on the Institute website. Candidates must produce the final marksheet of their B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech degree to the Academic Office within 60 days of their admission and having secured a minimum of 55% of marks/equivalent grades in aggregate. If one finally does not obtain 55% marks in B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech, then the studentship will stand cancelled.

Syllabus for the Entrance Test

  • 1. Analysis: Sequence and series of real numbers, continuity and differentiability of real valued functions of one variable and applications, sequence and series of functions, Riemann integration, improper integrals, metric spaces
  • 2. Algebra: (a) Set Theory: Sets, relations, functions, countable & uncountable sets.
  • (b) Group Theory: Groups, subgroups, cyclic groups, homomorphisms, Lagrange’s theorem, normal subgroups, permutation groups.
  • (c) Linear Algebra:Vector spaces, subspaces, linear independence, dimension; linear transformations, matrices, determinant, rank-nullity theorem, solution of linear system of equations, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, diagonalizability, inner product spaces.
