Categories of PhD Students

The Institute admits PhD students under the following categories:

i)   Regular

A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree.  He/she receives assistantship from the Institute or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency
The following are the criteria for receiving assistantship from the Institute:

B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent with valid and qualifying GATE score [valid and qualifying CEED score (for Dept. of Design)] above the prescribed cut off level

M.Sc. or equivalent with GATE score above the prescribed cut off level/NET(JRF)/INSPIRE qualification

M.A. in Humanities and Social Sciences or equivalent with NET qualification

ME/MTech/MDes or equivalent

GATE/CEED/NET/INSPIRE score/certificate requirement is exempted for a candidate with Master’s (M.A./M.Sc.) degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with minimum CPI of 8.0 OR a Bachelor’s (BTech/BDes) degree from a Centrally Funded Technical Institution(CFTI) with minimum CPI of 7.0] OR ME/MTech/MDes or equivalent

 

Sponsored (Full-Time)

A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/she must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application

 

Self-Financed (Full-Time)

A student in this category works full-time towards the PhD Programme. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student

 

Part-Time

A student in this category is a professionally employed person (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/she must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organization in which he/she is employed (Form III) must be enclosed at the time of application  

 

External

This category refers to a student employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organization of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre in which he/she is registered

He/she must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form IV) must be enclosed at the time of application

 

Eligibility

Minimum CPI or Percentage of marks in the qualifying degree, with specific requirements for different streams, has been indicated below:

 

For PhD in Engineering Program: Candidates should have master’s degree in Engineering /Technology /Medical Sciences/Veterinary Sciences/Pharmacy in a relevant area with a minimum; Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks

Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks

A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor’s level is also considered for admission in the dept. of Civil Engineering

 

For PhD in Design Program: Candidates should have M.Arch/M.Des degree or M.Tech/ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. Candidates should have Master’s degree in Applied Arts/Ergonomics/Fine Arts/Psychology/Physiology/Occupational Safety and Health/Journalism/Mass Media

Communication with a minimum CPI of 6.0 or 55% marks. Candidates should have Master’s degree in Management (MBA or equivalent) with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks with relevant studies in Design field, and Bachelor’s degree in any discipline

A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design (NID/CEPT or equivalent) with first class at Bachelor’s level

 

For PhD in Science Program: Candidates should have master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks
Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Science  from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)/Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0

 

For PhD in Humanities & Social Sciences Program: Candidates should have master’s degree in Arts/Commerce/Science in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent; four-year Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0

 

For PhD in Centre for the Environment, Centre for Energy, and Centre for Nanotechnology Programme: Master’s Degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Architecture/Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks

Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks

Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0, from any of the Centrally Funded Technical Institutions; Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks

 

For PhD in Centre for Linguistic Science and Technology: Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Environmental Science/Agriculture and other relevant fields with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks; or Master of Science with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks

Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Agriculture or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks

 

Note: Minimum Experience for Sponsored, Part-Time And External Categories Of Applicants for Phd Program must be a regular employee of the sponsoring  organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field

 

Financial Support

Junior Research Fellow (JRF); 1st & 2nd Year- Rs.25000/- pm

Senior Research Fellow (SRF) JRF with 2(two) years of research experience: 3rd to 5th Year - Rs.28000/- pm

 

Selection Procedure

The institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test and/or interview/portfolio review, if required, based on performance in GATE/ NET/CEED/INSPIRE, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc

 

Reservation

Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC (Non-creamy layer) and PD Categories; OBC (Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format. The OBC (NCL) Certificate, issued by competent authority, on or after 01-04-2016, shall only be acceptable

Relaxation for SC/ST/PD Candidates: Eligibility criteria 5% marks or 0.5 CPI will relax Eligibility criteria for SC/ST/PD applicants
