Character Sketch of Bibha Chowdhuri
Bibha Chowdhuri was a brilliant and determined woman. She was India’s first female scientist. She discovered the subatomic particle pi-meson. She studied cosmic rays and high-energy particle physics. She studied at the Bose Institute and then pursued her doctorate at the University of Manchester. She was taught by Patrick M.S. Blackett. Her thesis on cosmic rays earned her recognition from the local newspapers. She returned to India. Honi J. Bhabha selected her to work at TIFR. She also worked under the mentorship of Vikram Sarabhai. She continued to work tirelessly regardless of being continuously pushed aside because of her gender. She passed away in 1991. She gained recognition and praise posthumously.
