North, South, East, West Summary

Shaana is a school girl who lives in Rameswaram island off the southernmost tip of India. She goes on a vacation to various places in India and sends weekly postcards to her classmates. Through these postcards she gives a sneek peek into the geographical variations of India and the rich culture.

The first postcard is from Thajiwas glacier in Kashmir. The glacier is white and blue in colour. They wear four layers of clothing and her parents comment that the snow is less than before. They throw snowballs at each other. In the next postcard she tells that they reached Himachal Pradesh by train. She could see the mountains from their cabin and it was a quiet place. The chirping of colourful birds woke her in the morning. She tought that she heard bears growling but her mother clarified that the sound was her father’s snoring. She hoped to hug a bear. The third postcard mentioned that they travelled to Arunachal Pradesh. It took them two trains and a lot of road travel to reach the extreme eastern corner of the country. She had believed that all states which had ‘Pradesh’ in their name were next to each other but that wasn’t true. They walked through the forest to reach their treehouse. The forest was dense and one could easily get lost in it if one blinked or stopped to tie the shoelace. She hoped to see red pandas there. The next stop was in West Bengal’s Sunderbans or Mangrove forests. It was southwest from Arunachal. They went boating and her mother told her that the sunderbans were a wetland. She was amazed to see trees growing in the sea. Her mother was sad because the places saw frequent floods. She saw crocodiles and a snake and hoped they didn’t follow them home. Then the family travelled to Gujarat which is the extreme west end of the country. The travel from Arunachal to Gujarat took them two and a half days. She wondered why they came to see a dry, hot desert. It was like a sea beach without the sea. She liked the clothes which were pretty and colourful. She scored 88 percent marks in a surprise test given by her mother. The next destination was a drive towards the east to the Narmada river where they did rafting. The river was wild and scary and her dad said that earlier the river had more water in it. He got scared and vowed never to go rafting while she loved it and desired to go rafting again. In the next postcard she shared that she wasn’t sleeping because she wanted to look outside the window. They were in Goa, in the southwest part of India. There were plateaus, hills and beaches. There were several tunnels on the train journey. She used to be afraid but now she got used to them. She wished to tour the plateaus maybe when they got into class 11. Then they travelled south and reached Chennai. On the way to Puducherry they went surfing. She fell twice and did it nicely. Her parents splashed water on each other and Shaana controlled them. The beaches were different from those in her hometown, the waves were rougher and water was browner. In the next postcard she talks of crossing the Pamban bridge in the train which is a marvellous experience. She saw the ocean on both sides as the train travelled across the sea. In the last card she mentioned a stop at Olikaddu beach before getting home. Her mother wanted to teach her diving but they didn’t get a diving suit of her size. She was floating and saw fish while her parents dived under her. She found pebbles on the beach which she would share with her classmates the next day.
