Character Sketch of Funny Man
The poem begins by introducing an unusual man walking down the street. The speaker quickly notices that he is different because he wears a shoe on his head and a hat on his feet, which is the opposite of what most people do. Despite his odd appearance, when he sees the speaker, he acts kindly. He lifts the shoe from his head as if it were a hat and smiles politely. The speaker finds this very strange and comments that he has never seen anything so funny and odd. The man speaks eloquently and offers to give the speaker a “rose,” addressing him as “Your Highness.” Though strange, he was kind. However, instead of presenting a rose, he pulls out a currant bun (a type of sweet bread) and holds it up to the speaker’s nose. The speaker humorously remarks that he has never known a “rose” to have such a “funny-looking smell,” since he is smelling a bun instead of a flower. After that, the funny man sits on the ground and starts singing. The speaker describes the song as having a “funny-feeling sound,” indicating that it was very strange to listen to and made him feel peculiar. The man’s unusual behaviour of wearing a shoe on his head and hats on his feet, offering a bun like a rose, and finally hopping on his head, represents charming expressions of his unique self rather than flaws or signs of madness. Through the funny man, the poem encourages readers to appreciate those who stand out, showing the joy and wonder that such distinct personalities can bring to our lives.
