About the Program

  • The Department of Computer Science has started accepting applications for admission to the PhD program for the Spring 2021 semester. In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the entire process including tests and interviews will be held online.
  • There are two admission cycles, one beginning in September and another beginning in March every year.

Eligibility Criteria for Ashoka University PhD Admission 2021


  • Prospective students from any basic/natural or applied sciences discipline including Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and/or Chemical Engineering with an MSc./ MPhil./ MTech./ MEngg./ BTech degree with minimum of 55 percentage or equivalent grade are eligible to apply
  • Ashoka University offers financial assistance to all PhD scholars for presenting their research ideas/findings in reputed international conferences
  • This facility can be availed once by each Ph.D. student during their studentship
  • Maximum amount of aid is Rs. 2,00,000/-.

Sociology & Anthropology

  • Candidates with a background in sociology or anthropology or related disciplines, including history and the humanities, and a thorough knowledge of at least one Indian language are encouraged to apply
  • The minimum requirement is a Master’s degree with an aggregate of at least 55 % for

B.E. / B.Tech

 Bachelor’s degree holders in Computer Science/Engineering/Technology, ECE, EE (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after B.Sc/ Diploma in Engineering /Technology)

M. Sc / MCA or equivalent

 Master’s degree in any branch of Computer Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent

Ashoka University PhD Admission 2021 Application Process

  • Interested candidates can apply for the PhD program through Ashoka University’s PhD application portal, located at the link
  • Detailed guidelines on what to expect during the admission process, including the written tests and the interviews

Selection Criteria

  • Selection will be based on merit taking a combination of factors into consideration.
  • These factors include, but are not limited to performance of the candidate in the written test and interview, academic record and achievements such as scholarships, awards in competitions, paper publications and internship or work experience in a prestigious organization

Written Test

The written test may consist of subjective, open-ended and multiple-choice questions. The objective of the written test is to assess the basic computer science concepts of the applicant.

The topics for the written test are:

(1) Discrete Mathematics

(2) Probability and Statistics

(3) Design and Analysis of Algorithms

(4) Data Structures

(5) Database Management Systems

(6) Programming Languages

(7) Operating Systems

(8) Computer Organization and Architecture.


  • In this cycle, all the students, who qualify in the written test, will be called for an oral interview. A typical interview will be conducted by the faculty members of the Computer Science department

Financial Support & Funding

  • The monthly stipend paid to all PhD students selected as TAs funded by Ashoka University will be Rs. 35,000/- per month.
  • The PhD Scholars are eligible for Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) upon completing their candidacy.
  • The monthly stipend for an SRF is Rs 40,000/- per month. A contingency grant of Rs. 20,000/- per annum will be made available to each Ph.D. student.
  • Students funded externally through fellowships from UGC/CSIR/DST-INSPIRE, University waives the semester fees for those students (Rs. 12500/-).
