My Dear Soldiers Summary
The poet praises the soldiers for not only working all day but also giving up on their sleep to protect the citizens of their beloved country. A.P.J Abdul Kalam calls them ‘the great sons of our land’ because the soldiers are young adults who risk their youth and lives for the country. The poet praises their ability to endure a wide range of climatic conditions like wind, sun and snow along with different terrains like deserts, mountains, and deep valleys. The soldiers have to walk and travel through huge unpopulated and barren areas, like spiritual yogis. Unlike yogis, the soldiers do not do this for their pleasure or for spiritual awakening. Rather, they walk across wide expanses of area to guard the country, therefore making them selfless and patriotic. The army has different sanctions. Some guard the terrain, the others guard the air, and some guard the waters. Hence, the soldiers maintain complete surveillance and do not allow intruders onto their precious land through any means. The soldiers give out the prime of their lifetime to the safety of the country. When they fight and win, even the Earthly elements like the wind carry their victory. When the wind hits the wind chimes of the houses of the civilians, the chimes echo the victory of the soldiers in celebration. This shows that they are so bravely dedicated to their duties that the motherland also celebrates their efforts. The poet and the rest of the citizens pray that the young people return safely to their families after their duties and their life is full of happiness and acknowledgement of their hard work, displaying the immense gratitude they have for the soldiers.

My Dear Soldiers Poem Explanation

Poem:
Oh! Defenders of borders
You are great sons of my land
When we are all asleep
You still hold on to your deed
Windy season or snowy days
Or scorching sun’s sweltering rays
You are there guarding all the time awake
Treading the lonely expanses as yogis
Climbing the heights or striding the valleys
Defending the deserts or guarding the marshes
Surveillance in seas and by securing the air
Prime of your youth given to the nation!!
Wind chimes of my land vibrate your feat
We pray for you brave men!!
May the Lord bless you all!!

Explanation – The poet calls the soldiers of our country ‘defenders’ because they defend our country at the borders so that we, the citizens, can sleep peacefully at night. While we are sleeping, the soldiers work hard to make sure no one can disturb our sleep. With this, they sacrifice their sleep so they can successfully defend and protect their country. The soldiers have to endure extreme conditions like strong winds, snow storms and uncomfortably hot weathers. The soldiers have to be awake and alert at all times. They walk through huge areas where no one lives, which are the borders of the country. They are as dedicated to their task as yogis who are spiritual and dedicated to yoga. The soldiers have to climb mountains, cover places like valleys and marshes, and even desert areas. They have to make sure no one invades their country not just through land, but also through air and water, via the Airforce and the Navy armies. Therefore, complete surveillance is maintained by the youthful soldiers to ensure the safety of the civilians. The soldiers sacrifice their youth, which is the time when the person is most active and energetic, to defend their motherland. The poet believes that not only the citizens but the universe itself celebrates the victories of our brave soldiers. When the wind that flows following their victory strikes the wind chimes, it produces a musical sound in celebration of the soldiers’ efforts. The poet and the grateful citizens of the country pray for the safety and the undying service of the soldiers and pass their blessings to the soldiers.
