Character Sketch of the Narrator

The narrator starts as a frustrated person who trusts technology and expert services too much. At first, he feels proud of his new watch, thinking it’s perfect and cannot fail. This shows he values order and precision. As the story goes on, his character changes. He suffers because of bad luck and unskilled professionals. He tries to be clear and logical when explaining issues with the watch, but the watchmakers ignore or misunderstand him. This makes him feel more frustrated and helpless. His funny descriptions of the watch’s strange problems reveal his dark, sarcastic humor. He uses exaggerated phrases (“raging fever,” “human cabbage,” “brained him on the spot”) to cope with his annoyance. In the end, he feels defeated and let down by the so-called “experts,” having spent a lot of money for poor results. His final act of “braining” the last watchmaker shows his breaking point, highlighting his extreme frustration and the absurdity of his situation relatable to the struggle of the people with a broken item and unhelpful service.
