Character Sketch of Sri Satguru Ram Singh Ji

His first sermon was delivered on Baisakhi Day in 1857. He advised the people to believe in one God, lead a simple, honest life free from any kind of evil, to help the poor and the needy, and work for the freedom of the country. He strongly opposed child marriage, female foeticide, the taking of alcoholic drinks and non-vegetarian foods, the dowry system, religious fanaticism, cow slaughter and casteism. He started the Kuka Movement, a non-violent movement in which people raised their voices against British rule and in support of national unity. He gave the slogan of ‘Unite and Fight’ to the people of India. He was captured and exiled to Burma. Many Namdhari Sikhs were executed by the British in an attempt to slow the Kuka movement.

Character Sketch of Rani Lakshmi Bai

Her birth name was Manikarnika or Manu. She grew up learning how to ride horses and perform martial arts. She got married to Raja Gangadhar Rao of Jhansi, making her the ‘Rani of Jhansi’. When her husband and son died in 1853, she adopted a son under the ‘Policy of Lapse’ to prevent annexation of Jhansi. When that did not work, she rebelled against British rule, making her one of the leaders in the First War of Independence, 1875. She died on the battlefield when she was surrounded by Sir Hugh Rose’s army in the forest of Kalpi.

Character Sketch of Udham Singh

He worked at the Jallianwala Bagh, serving guests water, when the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre occurred. Filled with hatred towards the British, especially Michael O’Dwyer, he joined the Gadar party in America and changed his name to Ram Muhammad Singh Azad. The new name symbolised the unity of India. On 13th March, 1940, in Caxton Hall, London, Udham Singh fired six shots, killing Michael O’Dwyer, who had approved Dyer’s action as the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab.
