Captain Hagberd was looking for his son, Harry Hagberd. He sold his home in Colchester and bought two cottages in Colebrook, one for himself and the other one he rented to Bessie’s father. He shifted to Colebrook because he got the letter telling him that his son was there with a girl. He was starving for his son to decorate his home for his son’s welcome. Though the people around him were making fun of him, still he chose to keep his faith. He was living in self-delusion, keeping himself from reality. When Harry Hagberd came, he chose to escape from reality. He wanted his son to become a lawyer’s clerk but his son ran away, and now he wants him to live a well-settled married life. His son again left him.

Character Sketch of Bessie
Bessie was Josiah Carvil, a blind boat builder’s daughter. She used to live next to the Old Hagberd cottage. They used to share the same fence, which she used for drying her clothes. The Old Hagberd shared a fatherly bond with her, as he would softly tell her that it would rot the wooden fence. Her father would keep on shouting for her for no reason. He would need her help even with things he could do himself. Moreover, he treated her as his servant, while he could afford to keep a servant for himself as Old Hagberd had suggested to Bessie. She remains agitated as she suppresses her emotions within herself, while other characters express theirs with her. Harry used her and left her behind, leaving her emotionally exhausted and driving her insane. He even took five quid from her, for which he came back to Old Hagberd. To keep her sanity intact, she also used the old Hagberd method of self-deception.

Character Sketch of Harry Hagberd
The son of Captain Hagberd. He chose to run away from his home sixteen years ago. He has done almost everything except be a tailor or a soldier. He has worked as a boundary rider, shorn sheep, carried his gear, and hunted whales. He has rigged ships, searched for gold, and skinned dead cattle, and he has walked away from more wealth than his father could have earned in his entire life. Currently, he is a sailor and doesn’t want to live a life his father has designed for him. He left the home because he didn’t want to become a lawyer’s clerk, and now he doesn’t want to stay because he knows that his father wants him to live a well-settled married life. He considered himself as Gambusino, for whom a woman can satisfy and make them live a well-settled life. He did the same with Bessie, he used her and left her behind. He even came back to Old Hagberd for money, not to visit his father, which he eventually got from Bessie. He is selfish, irresponsible, and careless.
