Dr Solomon Margolin was of Jewish origin, from Sencimin, Poland. Now he lived in New York, USA and had become a successful doctor with his office at West end Avenue and a list of wealthy patients. He was a committed professional who abided by the hippocratic oath. He was a successful man but still he was haunted by sadness of the past and a sense of being a failure. In America, Margolin was a prominent part of the Jewish community and the Senciminer society. He attended all the functions and parties and held positions in the management. He even treated the rabbis, refugees and writers free of charge and at times, helped them get a bed at the hospital. Margolin was tall and handsome and had a way with women. He took great care of his looks. He had met his wife, Gretl, a nurse by profession, at a hospital in Berlin. He became and agonist and atheist, however, he took Gretl to Seders at Abraham Mekheles’, a Landsman from Sencimin.
During childhood, he lived in Sencimin, and was considered a child prodigy. He had been in love with a girl, Raizel but the love was not fulfilled because she married another man and was later shot dead by the Nazis.

Character Sketch of Gretl
Gretl was Dr Solomon Margolin’s wife. She had been a nurse at a hospital in Berlin where they met. Her two brothers were dead and her aged ailing father lived with her sister in Hamburg. She sent him financial assistance every month. Gretl insisted on doing all the housework herself, even the laundry. It had become a mania with her. Every day she scoured the oven. She was forever polishing the windows of their apartment on the sixteenth floor that too without using a safety belt. All the other housewives in the building ordered their groceries home delivered, but Gretl lugged the heavy bags from the supermarket herself.
She herself had become almost Jewish in New York. She had made friends with Jewish women, joined Hadassah, learned to cook Jewish dishes. Even her sigh was Jewish. And she lamented continually over the Nazi catastrophe. She had her plot waiting for her beside his in that part of the cemetery that the Senciminers had reserved for themselves.
