Character Sketch of Emperor Yayati
He was a powerful king and ancestor of the Pandavas. He was known for never being defeated in battle. He devoted himself to the worship of the gods and his ancestors and the welfare of his subjects. The latter made him particularly famous as a ruler. He had five sons. He was hit by a curse from Sukracharya for wronging his wife, Devayani. The curse made him prematurely old. Yayati missed his youth because he had not fully enjoyed his youthful desires. We see his desperation when he begs his five sons to take his old age and give their youth to him. We see his sorrow and helplessness when four of his five sons refuse to take the curse from him. When he gets his youth from Puru, his fifth son, he spends many years trying to quench his desire. We see his maturity when he realises that desire can never be quenched by indulgence. We see his wisdom when he gives back Puru’s youth to him and took back the curse. He spent the rest of his life in simplicity in the woods. When he died, he attained heaven because he accepted old age, the realisation of desire and indulgence, and adopted a plain lifestyle.

Character Sketch of Puru
He was Emperor Yayati’s fifth and youngest son. He is Yayati’s dearest son because he never refused any of his father’s wishes. We see how filial love played an important role in Puru’s character. Puru accepted the curse on his father and became old. He gave his father his own youth and ruled the kingdom in his father’s name. Puru was wise and smart, making him famous as a ruler. When he got his youth back, his sacrifice to keep his father happy and his sharp mind were rewarded with him becoming the king after Emperor Yayati.
