Eveline, a nineteen-year-old girl from Dublin, lives an oppressive life that is full of domestic abuse from her father. After her mother’s death, Eveline’s existence becomes one of hardship and loneliness, with no support from her family. Seeking love and emotional security, she turns to Frank, her boyfriend, her only hope. She believes Frank can offer the affection and stability she desires.
Working at a local store, Eveline also faces emotional mistreatment from her boss, Miss Gavan, further fueling her desire for respect and a better life. She dreams of escaping to Buenos Aires, where she imagines a future free from abuse and filled with dignity, with Frank as her partner. Her city has given her nothing but sorrow, and she wants to leave it behind.
As Eveline transitions into adulthood, she wants to break free like many others who have desired better lives elsewhere. Though she dreams of a brighter future, her inability to take bold steps and make firm decisions prevents her from moving on. Despite recognizing that her home life is unbearable, Eveline finally finds herself paralyzed by fear and uncertainty, unable to seize the opportunity for change.

Character Sketch of Eveline’s father
The man is a drunkard and treats Eveline harshly. He takes her pay and refuses to contribute to household expenses. He accuses Eveline of squandering money. He drives his wife to madness and after her death, he focuses the daughter with similar ill treatment. When the wife was alive, he took the kids for a picnic once or twice. Then he wore her bonnet to make the kids laugh.
He does not approve Eveline’s relationship with Frank because he does not want her to go with him. He has fixed her as a maid and earner for his drinks.

Character Sketch of Frank

He is gifted with a good voice and sings for her too. He calls her Poppens out of fun. He plans to settle with her in Buenos Aires. He shouts and calls Eveline to join him on the ship and is distressed when she gives him a cold look.
