Dialogue writing is an interesting activity and CBSE has added it in the syllabus of class 9 English Communicative. A student needs to have the detailed information of the topic of dialogue writing and that’s where this post comes to your rescue. What is dialogue writing?

Most of us by now have probably at least once in their lives come through the word “dialogue.” As social individuals, communication is essential and has been done since time immemorial. The interchange of spoken words between two or more characters in a literary work of literature is referred to as dialogue.
A dialogue can be about anything – a simple discussion about what you will eat for dinner, a serious discussion about the upcoming elections,or a discussion about an event taking place next month. The primary thing here, to remember is that a dialogue is a conversation between two people.It is employed in almost all types of writing, from short tales to novels to plays. Direct speech is frequently used in dialogue writing.



Types of Dialogues

Dialogues can be broadly classified into two types. They are as follows:-

  1. Inner Dialogue: Essentially Inner dialogues are when the individual or the character talks to himself or herself. Inner dialogue refers to a character’s ideas and thoughts that are not uttered aloud by the character. They can be anything a character or individual is thinking while the other character is speaking, as well as their opinions on what is happening or any other action taking place around them. These inner monologues are not usually enclosed by quotation marks. In layman’s terms, it is the conversation between the character/individual and their mind which is often referred to as a monologue.
  2. Outer Dialogue: Contrary to inner monologue, when a character talks to another character it is referred to as outer dialogue. Thoughts uttered or spoken out loud when an individual talks to another individual is outer dialogue.These outer dialogues are usually enclosed by quotation marks.



Why is Dialogue as a tool essential?

  • Expository- Provides readers with vital information about the characters or plot without overtly stating it.
  • Characterization – Assists writers in making their characters resemble real people and displaying their characteristics.
  • Character qualities – personality traits such as shyness, timidity, introversion, extrovertism, and so on.
  • An individual’s or a character’s background can also be defined by his slang or colloquial language. It is also employed in dialogue writing at times.



Format of a dialogue

To promote clarity and readability, dialogue writing follows a precise format. Here’s an example of the usual dialogue format:

Character A: [dialogue]
Character B: [dialogue]

For each new speaker, begin a new paragraph. This aids in character differentiation and makes the discourse easier to follow.

Character A: I’ve always loved this city. The bustling streets, the vibrant nightlife. It’s a place where dreams come true.

Character B: I agree. There’s something magical about it.

Character A: Exactly! It’s like every corner holds a story waiting to be told.

  • Break up the speech with actions or descriptions to add context. These can come before, during, or after the uttered words. Actions and descriptions serve to bring the scenario to life and enhance the dialogue. For example:-

Character A: (running his hands through his hair in frustration) I can’t believe it! I’ve been working on this project for months, and now it’s all gone.

Character B: (placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.) Don’t worry, we’ll find a solution. We always do.

  • Remember, dialogue is an essential tool for character development, advancing the plot, and conveying emotions. By using the proper format and incorporating actions and descriptions, you can create compelling and realistic conversations between your characters.



Tips for Dialogue Writing

There are certain essential tips that one should follow and remember when dialogue writing.

  1. Punctuation: It is important for you to have correct punctuation when writing a dialogue. Punctuation would ensure that your writing is sensible. Within punctuation itself it is important that you remember certain key points:-
  • The first requirement is to include a colon after the character’s name to indicate who is speaking at the time. A hyphen is sometimes used in place of a colon.
  • Since the character’s name is a proper noun, it should always begin with a capital letter. Characters such as shopkeeper, students 1, 2, and so on will appear from time to time. You must additionally use a capital letter in these instances.
  • If you include a character’s dialogue in another character’s dialogue, it must be enclosed in single quotation marks. Do you think Rakesh’s ‘I will take the lead’ statement has a hidden agenda?
  • Character actions and body language can be described in words and appear in brackets. For instance, I am tired. (She sighed and shrugged her shoulders.) However, I will do it just for you.
  1. Reduce the use of filler words ( such as, hello or thank you) – Filler words like Hi and Thank you are common in everyday speech and should be avoided. Dialogue should be more concise and meaningful. It serves a purpose in the story, such as characterization, plot movement, and so on, so that readers are thoroughly involved.
  2. The goal of dialogue is to deliver important information to readers – Personalities of the characters, conflict, and story movement
  3. Tone and mood of the story to be maintained through dialogue- Tone and mood of the story can be easy going at first, tense in the middle, and gradually settle down. As a result, character dialogue must also be coordinated.
  4. Combine dialogue with narrative. Long stretches of conversation can pull the reader away from the action of a scene. Interpolate descriptions of your characters’ bodily postures or other activity in the room as they speak. This simulates the real-world experience of hearing someone speak while also taking in visual and smell inputs.
  5. In dialogue writing, colloquial language is permitted, but only if it fits the context. Do not use it if not necessary.
  6. Dialogues do not have to be grammatically perfect all of the time. That doesn’t mean you can compose sentences with no structure. Individual words or phrases can be used as dialogue. For instance, “What?” “Of course!”, among others.
  7. Applying dialogue tags adds clarity to the characters’ actions and body language, but make sure you don’t use them with every single dialogue. Also, make certain that you do not use too little.



Question of dialogue writing for class 9 English Communicative details

Word Limit: The word limit should not exceed more than 100 words. The dialogues written in the exams for class 9 should not have a word limit exceeding 100 words. Maximum words should be upto 100 and minimum there should be at least 80 words for the dialogues to be marked appropriately.

Marks: The question on dialogue writing asked in the exams will be of 5 marks.
