The narrator is shown to be an anxious and easily excitable man. He can get sad, angry, excited, hopeful, and anxious easily. He can be easily persuaded. He is proud, not just for his art, but also for his self-respect to not beg or borrow money. He is passionate about painting. He is easily devastated and tends to give up quickly. He is a pessimistic man who thinks the worst of people’s words and situations. For example, when Naeem told him to start painting again, the author lashed out because he thought that Naeem was mocking his blindness. In reality, Naeem was simply encouraging him to not lose his passion for art.

Naeem is a soft-spoken and cheerful man. He has a soothing dreamy voice. He is selfless, kind and motivating. He is optimistic as he urges the author to be hopeful even in his blindness. He is a good friend, showing great support and companionship to the blind author. Even when the author yells at him, he remains quiet and does not yell back. Naeem is good at comforting people and making them see hope. For example, when the author is devastated by the failure of the second operation, Naeem consoles him. Naeem does not give up easily and when he is encouraging the author, he doesn’t let anything make the author give up his passion for painting.
