Types of Sentences
Sentences can be primarily divided into four types, namely assertive, interrogative, imperative and exclamatory sentences:
1. Assertive Sentences
Assertive Sentences or Declarative Sentences state facts, opinions, or ideas in a straightforward manner. They end with a full stop(.). These sentences can either be positive or negative.
Structure: subject + verb + object
Examples,

2. Interrogative Sentences
Interrogative Sentences ask questions to gather information or clarify something. They always end with a question mark (?).
Structure: Wh-word/ Auxiliary + subject + verb + object + ?
Examples,
- Where do you live?
- Did you complete your assignment?
3. Imperative Sentences
Imperative Sentences give commands, requests, instructions, or advice. They may end with a full stop (.) or an exclamation mark (!). It is important to note that there is usually no subject- because the subject is understood, it is YOU.
Structure: Subject (You) + Verb + Object (Subject is often implied and omitted)
Examples,
- Please turn off the lights.
- Never give up on your dreams!
4. Exclamatory Sentences
Exclamatory Sentences express strong emotions such as excitement, surprise, or anger. They always end with an exclamation mark (!).
Structure:
- What (+ adjective) + noun + subject + verb + !
- How (+ adjective/adverb) + subject + verb + !
Examples,
- What a beautiful sunset!
- How exciting the movie was!

Tips for Solving Questions on Types of Sentences
When solving questions related to types of sentences, there are several key points to keep in mind:
1. Focus on the Purpose: Think about what the sentence is doing. Is it stating a fact, asking something, giving a command, or showing emotion? This helps you quickly decide the type. For Example, What a beautiful dress! (Expresses emotion- Exclamatory).
2. Watch the Punctuation: A sentence ending with a period is usually assertive or imperative, a question mark signals interrogative, and an exclamation mark suggests exclamatory.
3. Look for Clue Words: Words like who, what, why indicate a question (interrogative); please, do not and such words suggest a command (imperative); and what a, how show strong emotion (exclamatory).
4. Spot the Hidden Subject: If a sentence starts with a verb and does not mention a subject, it is likely imperative. For Example, Close the door! (Command- Imperative)
5. Try Changing the Sentence Type: If you have trouble identifying the type, rewriting a sentence in another form can help. For example, if “He is kind.” becomes “Is he kind?”, you know the first is assertive, and the second is interrogative.
