The wealthy man in the poem craves to have more and more riches despite the wealth that he has. He owns much, yet feels like he has nothing. His mind is controlled by a strong desire for more. He is dissatisfied with what he already has. Even great wealth fails to satisfy him.
Each day, the man asks for more gold. A magical tree, Kalpaka, gives him great riches. He receives many full pots of coins. But his eyes focus on a single pot, the eighth one, that is not full. Instead of feeling lucky for the seven full pots of gold coins that he owns, his attention stays fixed on the one pot that remains half empty. This man cannot see the value of what is already his. His heart and thoughts are filled with greed. He becomes restless and obsessed. He loses mental peace and grows greedy with each passing day.
He walks away from his loved ones. The bond with family becomes weak. He gives up care, comfort, and even kindness. He ignores his basic needs, such as food and rest. The man is in a mad race to fill the pot with gold coins. Slowly, his body grows weak. His health breaks down. He starts using dishonest ways to gain more coins. He loses the sense of right and wrong. The goal of filling the pot becomes greater than everything else. The desire for gold becomes a curse. His values and strength fade away. Even with wealth in hand, the man cannot stop chasing more of it. In the end, his body gives up. He dies before achieving his goal. Nothing is left but his failure and the lesson it leaves behind. The man shows how greed grows like fire. It eats away at health, peace, and love. It leaves behind only sorrow. His story teaches that real happiness does not come from having more. It comes from being thankful for what one has.
