IIT JAM Paper Pattern – Papers, Session and Timings
The IIT JAM 2024 will be held for seven test papers namely,
- Chemistry
- Geology
- Mathematics
- Biotechnology
- Economics
- Mathematical Statistics
- Physics
The exam will be conducted through online mode. The mode of language and instruction for the examination is English. The total time duration for IIT JAM 2024 is 3 hours with the question paper being divided into 3 sections, i.e., A, B and C. All the sections are compulsory. There are a total of 60 questions asked, with the exam being of a total of 100 marks. The questions are multiple choice questions, multiple select questions and numerical answer type questions in nature.
There is no negative marking in Section B and C, however negative marking will be done in Section A. In section A, for the 1 mark question, 1/3 of marks will be deducted and for 2 marks questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted for each incorrect response. No marks will be deducted for unattempted questions.

IIT JAM Exam Pattern Section A
This section comprises a total of 30 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with 10 questions of one mark each and 20 questions of two marks each. Each MCQ has four choices out of which only one choice is the correct answer. In section A, for the 1 mark question, 1/3 of marks will be deducted and for 2 marks questions, 2/3 marks will be deducted for each incorrect response. No marks will be deducted for unattempted questions.This section is of 50 marks.
IIT JAM Exam Pattern Section B
This section comprises a total of 10 Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) carrying two marks each. Each MSQ is similar to MCQ but with the difference that MSQ may have one or more than one correct choice(s) out of the four given choices. The candidate gets full credit and marks only if he/she selects all the correct answer(s) and no wrong answers.There is no negative marking in Section B. No marks will be deducted for unattempted questions.This section is of 20 marks.
IIT JAM Exam Pattern Section C
This section comprises a total of 20 Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions involving 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of two marks each. For these NAT questions, the answer is a signed real number, which needs to be entered using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor. Note that no choices will be shown for NAT questions.There is no negative marking in Section C.No marks will be deducted for unattempted questions.This section is of 30 marks.
