The various instances that show the difference between the iron master and his daughter are as follows-
- The ironmaster is impulsive while Edla is mature. The ironmaster acts without thinking and later goes back on his decisions when he come to know the reality of the stranger whom he had got home.
- Edla is observant and a look at the peddler’s face indicates that perhaps he has escaped the police or he has committed a theft.
- The iron master mistook the peddler to be an army comrade of his and later when he realizes his mistake, he becomes furious while Edla is patient and sympatheticIt was due to these experiences that the author developed an aversion to water.
