Character Sketch of Mother Teresa (Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu)
Mother Teresa was one of history’s most extraordinary figures, a living saint embodying selfless love and service. Born in 1910 in Skopje, she heard a divine voice at fifteen telling her to “Follow God and serve others,” transforming her life. She left home to become a missionary in India, learning English, Hindi, and Bengali. While teaching affluent students in Kolkata, she couldn’t ignore the desperately poor, personally carrying sick people off streets and caring for them. Malcolm Muggeridge witnessed her cleaning a dying man’s sores “without disgust,” her face glowing with “peace and love.”
In 1946, another calling told her to leave the convent and live among the poor. Saying “to fail would be to break faith,” she founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1948. Despite winning the Nobel Peace Prize, she remained humble, wearing a simple blue-bordered sari. She held no political power yet “ruled hearts and minds” through moral authority. Before her 1997 death, she established branches worldwide, bringing comfort to the destitute. Mother Teresa embodied “give love till it hurts,” proving that selfless love is the world”s most powerful force.
