Character Sketch of the Author

The author, Mahadevi Verma, is depicted as gentle, kind, compassionate and emotionally sensitive. She is warm and empathetic to animals. To her, animals are not just pets but companions and kindred souls that receive care, dignity, and emotional concern. One example of this is when Mahadevi rescues the injured baby squirrel, Gillu, and nurses him with deliberate care and tenderness so that he may thrive. 

Moreover, Verma is observant, tender, and selfless in caring for Gillu that her emotional bond of affection deepens by caring for him. She simply gets attached to Gillu, but recognises that while he was in her care, he should remain free. Her character shows a capacity to bond companionship beyond human relations, and the emotionally fulfilling companionship possible with animals. Character Sketch of Gillu

Gillu, the baby squirrel’s character is portrayed as vulnerable, clever, affectionate, and grateful. He was small and injured when he was first found, but his will to live and the author’s caring nature allowed him to survive. Gillu formed an attachment to the author very quickly and showed trust and fondness for her specifically. The author would see this trust when Gillu would suckle out of the dropper, or if he jumped onto her shoulder. 

Gillu was not just bubbly and full of life; he was disciplined and observant, evidenced by the fact that he would sit very calmly when the author didn’t feel well and returned to his nest on time. His affectionate nature and charm, along with his innocent demeanour, made him a symbol of love, loyalty, and companionship. The author’s experience of Gillu’s death was impactful and had a profound emotional effect, showing how much Gillu influenced the author.
