What did Franz notice that was unusual about the school that day?
OR
Why did Franz find the atmosphere of the school strange that day?
Answer:
Franz noticed the absence of the routine hustle and bustle caused by the opening and closing of desks, repeating of the lessons and rapping of the teacher’s ruler on the table. Everything seemed strange. His classmates were already seated in their places and M. Hamel was walking up and down the class with his iron ruler under his arm. The usual noise was replaced by a strange stillness that was the characteristic of the school on a Sunday morning. After some time, he noticed that the village elders had occupied the back benches. M Hamel was dressed in his best dress, the one that he wore on inspection and prize days.
